Royals vs Guardians Preview
At age 34, Michael Wacha has had a bit of a career resurgence over the last few years, posting a sub-four ERA in each of the past four seasons. He set a career high in starts and innings pitched last season and remains a solid middle-rotation arm for Kansas City.
In his first start of 2026, Wacha was brilliant against the Braves. He went six scoreless innings, allowing just three hits while striking out seven batters. The seven strikeouts were a bit surprising after his strikeout rate dropped to a career low last season. Wacha doesn’t throw hard and typically does not miss many bats, but he has a filthy changeup that allows him to consistently produce weak contact.
Kansas City’s offense finished in the bottom five in scoring last season and really struggled to produce outside of Bobby Witt Jr. The Royals were much more optimistic about their bats coming into this year, but have started shaky once again. A 13-run outburst last week has made their overall numbers look decent, but they have scored more than four runs just three times so far this year.
Maikel Garcia is hitting the ball well at the top of the order, and Kyle Isbel is off to a great start at the bottom of the lineup, but everybody in between has started slowly. Even Witt has not looked like his normal self at the plate. Witt, Vinnia Pasquantino, and Jac Caglianone have combined for zero home runs this season.
Cleveland’s Opening Day starter, Tanner Bibee, will make his third start of the young season, allowing four runs across his first nine innings. He surrendered three home runs in the opener but settled down last time out. Bibee has 11 strikeouts through his first two starts as he begins this year with a revamped pitching arsenal.
After regressing to a 4.24 ERA in 2025, Bibee made some tweaks to his pitching mix late into the season and heavy into spring training. He transitioned from using a sweeper to a much more effective cutter, which he says works as a “power gyro slider.” This new pitch really improved his whiff rate through the spring and has already helped him punch out four hitters.
We know Cleveland is going to rely on its pitching factory, and anything they get from the offense will be more of a bonus. The Guardians ranked 28th in scoring and 29th in wOBA last year, yet still won the division. Through 10 games, they sit 25th in scoring and 26th in team OPS. It continues to be much of the same for Cleveland, whose lineup thins out very quickly after the top couple of guys.
That being said, one of the league’s worst offenses might have the league’s top must-watch at bat through the first few weeks of the season. Rookie Chase DeLauter has burst onto the scene and came out mashing to begin the season. After dipping his toe in the majors during the postseason last year, DeLauter made the Opening Day roster and is batting .313 with five home runs through the first 10 games. He leads the Guardians in nearly every offensive category and seems to be the early frontrunner for Rookie of the Year.

Royals vs Guardians Picks
Wacha had a really strong 2025 season, posting a 3.86 ERA but just a 10-13 record thanks to little run support. Kansas City scored just 3.28 runs per start for Wacha, the lowest in the league among qualified starters.
It doesn’t look like that is going to change anytime soon with the slow start to Kansas City’s offense. Outside of two big games, the offense has managed to do nothing at the plate, and even the top guys have yet to get going.
Despite the strong traditional stats, Wacha is not without his own concerns. He relies on elite command rather than elite stuff. Wacha’s strikeout rate continues to decline, reaching a career low last season. As he misses fewer bats, he relies more on limiting hard contact.
Cleveland’s offense ranks near the bottom of the league as well, but we expect that. They are built to rely on their pitching, and any offense is just a bonus. So far, that bonus has been rookie sensation Chase DeLauter. He has five home runs and a 1.124 OPS and is a must-watch every time he comes to the plate right now.
Bibee had a rough 2025 season, but he made clear changes to his pitch mix, and the signs of a bounce back are there. He finished last year strong after tweaking his arsenal and had a great spring. A few home runs spoiled Opening Day, but 11 strikeouts through nine innings is a great sign for Bibee that his new slider is generating more swings and misses.
It’s not a huge edge on Monday, but I favor the Guardians at home with Bibee on the mound. Both offenses are struggling, but Cleveland is built to grind out low-scoring wins. They have the better starting pitcher and the better bullpen.
