The Tigers are expecting a lot from this upcoming season, making a storybook run to the playoffs in 2024 and finding themselves smack-dab in the middle of a wide-open division.

One thing that's going to dictate much of how this goes, however, is their ability to hit left-handed pitching. Detroit finished 23rd in wRC+ versus southpaws a season ago, and right away will be thrust into the fire against one of the very best in Snell. Things didn't really improve as the year wore on considering it was just 21st in Expected Batting Average to southpaws in the second half, and it shouldn't really come as a surprise given the number of left-handed bats in the order.

The hope here is that this team's young left-handed hitters take a step forward against lefties this season, and the addition of Gleyber Torres towards the top of the order can provide an instant fix to its issues. There's that, and then there's Spencer Torkelson — who was viewed for years as this team's right-handed power bat of the future who flopped upon making the majors but has once again teased us all with an excellent spring training.

If that minor breakthrough was legitimate, the team could be in slightly better shape. The tough news is that injuries have already hit this team in the outfield and now it will be running out two poor hitters in Manuel Margot and Ryan Kriedler in center field.

Fortunately, this team's loaded with pitching — and Thursday should be an excellent showcase. This bullpen got even better with the addition of Tommy Kahnle, and it will back up Tarik Skubal fresh off the season of his career. The lefty pitched to a splendid 2.72 Expected ERA in 31 starts, boasting another beefy strikeout rate of over 30% without the usual detractors we see from strikeout types like home runs and walks.

Snell, like Skubal, is entering 2025 off the back of a very impressive 2024 — though his story is a bit different. The former Cy Young Award winner got off to a rocky start in San Francisco after signing late in the offseason, but quickly improved to finish with one of the top strikeout rates in the game at 34.7%.

The story with Snell remained largely the same as he pitched to another poor 10.5% walk rate, though it was not only an improvement upon his 13.3% clip in 2023 but a number which was slightly weighed down by his early struggles. While Detroit didn't hit lefties all that well last year, it at least ranked just outside the top 10 in walk rate and brought its strikeout rate down to rank among the middle of the league in the second half.

The Dodgers have had issues of their own when it comes to hitting lefties in years' past, but 2025 saw them sit atop baseball with a 121 wRC+ in the split. This lineup projects to be just as dangerous thanks to the acquisition of Tommy Edman at last year's trade deadline, though it's fair to wonder how it will fare following its formidable first four in the order.

Max Muncy is approaching 35 years old and L.A.'s bench is around that age on average. Enrique Hernandez will step in to cover the short-side platoon for Michael Conforto on Wednesday after a relatively flat season, and there are also questions surrounding Will Smith after a down year and Andy Pages, who will be its every-day center fielder and cooled off significantly after a hot start.
