My Tigers vs White Sox Betting Preview

Detroit Tigers Betting Preview: Seeks Spark to Fend Off Guardians’ Push

The Tigers have seen their AL Central lead dwindle to just six games, as the Guardians continue to battle for the lead.

Detroit has dealt with a combination of poor pitching and even worse hitting, leading to its recent struggles.

Taking the mound for the Tigers is Chris Paddack, whom the Twins dealt to their division foes at the deadline.

Paddack is two starts into his Tigers tenure, and that's a pretty fitting description for his entire year. He shut down the Diamondbacks to one earned run over six innings, then allowed four runs in four innings against the Twins.

The veteran hurler is a pure innings eater. He's a bit better than his 4.91 ERA indicates, as he has a 4.72 xERA and 4.44 FIP. Paddack used to punch out hitters with ease, but he's down to a 6.55 K/9 this year. Plus, he's allowing 1.41 homers per nine and ranks in the 20th percentile in hard hit rate and 20th in xBA.

After using its bullpen to make a magical postseason run last year, Detroit is struggling to shut teams down with its bullpen. The Tigers rank 20th in ERA this year, and the same is true since the All-Star break. They added a few pieces to beef up their bullpen, like closer Kyle Finnegan, but it still isn't enough to carry the pen.

The Tigers' inability to work counts is very worrisome. Nobody is worse at drawing walks than Detroit, which has a jarring 5.1 walk rate in its last 21 games, while punching out 26.3% of the time — the second most often in that span. They rank top-12 in both home runs and ISO, but it's become a home-run or bust approach.

Chicago White Sox Betting Preview: Looks to Stay Hot at Plate vs Tigers

The White Sox already surpassed last season's win total with over 50 games to go. Does that mean the White Sox are a good team? Not necessarily. What it does mean is the White Sox aren't a set-and-forget fade every game, and it's worth diving deeper into their matchups.

Chicago will begin Monday's game with Elvis Peguero for an inning, before handing the ball to a former Tiger, Tyler Alexander, for the bulk of the innings.

The Brewers DFA'd Peguero last week, and he's set to make his first outing on the Southside. He posted a 4.91 ERA in just 7 1/3 innings this year and last pitched in the bigs in May.

Alexander is nothing special, but he doesn't allow hard contact and can give the White Sox four or five solid innings. The former Tigers southpaw owns a 4.52 ERA with a 4.41 xERA and a 3.32 FIP. He can also force the Tigers to sit Kerry Carpenter or make him face a lefty, which is a massive win.

I’m not entirely sure I buy into the White Sox offense, but the numbers are the numbers. And those numbers say that Chicago ranks fourth in wRC+ since July 18th.

Chicago has ten hitters with a wRC+ better than 110 in its last 20 games. The White Sox also rank sixth in strikeout rate and first with 38 homers during this lava-hot stretch.

Tigers vs White Sox Prediction, Betting Analysis

Putting Paddack against the team with the most homers in baseball for nearly a month is a disaster waiting to happen.

Grabbing the scalding hot White Sox offense at plus money versus a reeling Tigers team feels like a strong play. Alexander versus Paddack is a wash, and Chicago is hitting far better than the Tigers right now. Everything points in Chicago's direction.

Pick: White Sox ML
