Tigers vs Braves Expert MLB Pick
After signing with Detroit following eight seasons in Houston, Framber Valdez continues to be one of the most reliable starting pitchers in the game.
He doesn’t have elite stuff. He doesn’t throw 100. He isn’t a big strikeout guy. But he eats innings, keeps the ball on the ground, and avoids big mistakes.
In six starts with the Tigers, Valdez has a 3.41 ERA, which mostly came in one start. Valdez has allowed two runs or fewer in five of his six outings this year and averages 5 2/3 innings per start. Valdez has one of the highest ground-ball rates in the league, keeping 62.2% of batted balls on the ground throughout his career. Valdez has never been a big strikeout guy, but he is sitting at just 16.2% K-rate this season, the lowest of his career.
Early in the season, the Tigers’ offense was carried by the young bats of Kevin McGonigle and Colt Keith. McGonigle is not only the front-runner for the AL Rookie of the Year, but is playing like a legitimate MVP candidate.
The offense has really gotten going now that Riley Greene is mashing the ball and Spencer Torkelson has found his power stroke with a five-game homer streak over the weekend.
Detroit ranks sixth among MLB lineups in team OPS but third over the past week. They also have the second-best run differential in the American League.
With all the injuries Atlanta’s pitching staff has already dealt with, they desperately needed somebody to step up, and so far, it has been Bryce Elder.
After posting a 5.30 ERA across 28 starts last season, Elder has dazzled, posting a 1.95 ERA over his first six starts. Elder has pitched into the seventh inning in half of his starts this year, eating key innings for the Braves.
He made some big tweaks this offseason that caused dramatic improvement. He lowered his arm angle, dropping his release point by 2.4 inches, and added a cutter to his arsenal. Elder has cut his sinker usage in half after it was his worst pitch last year, and is now relying on a reworked slider that has been far more effective.
After basically every hitter in the Braves lineup underperformed expectations last season, they have been able to bounce back this season.
Matt Olson, Ozzie Albies, and Michael Harris are all off to great starts and look like their old selves again. Ronald Acuna Jr. is off to a slow start for his standards, but the breakout of catcher Drake Baldwin has helped to offset that.
Atlanta has arguably been the best offense in the league through the first month. They are battling the Dodgers for the top spot in nearly every category. Atlanta currently leads the league in hits and runs and sits third in home runs. The power numbers are back after last year’s power outage, and they are getting production throughout the lineup.

How To Bet My Tigers vs Braves Pick, Betting Analysis
Both of these pitchers are having nice seasons. Elder made some adjustments this offseason and is having a breakout start, and Valdez is a high-floor guy who is as reliable as they come.
That being said, I am still siding with the offenses in this matchup.
Atlanta leads the league in runs scored, and both of these teams rank among the top six lineups in team OPS.
The Braves have done it with power, clubbing the third most home runs with four players over five home runs. Detroit gets it done with aggressive baserunning and clutch hits — the Tigers take more extra bases than any team in the league and rank in the top five in team batting average with runners in scoring position.
Both of these teams are white-hot at the plate. Olson, Albies, and Harris are mashing the ball for Atlanta — all three have an OPS over 1.000 over the past two weeks. For Detroit, it has been McGonigle, Greene, and Torkelson locked in at the plate.
These two teams both have star power at the top of the lineup and are also getting solid offensive contributions from the hitters down at the bottom of the order. That makes each lineup very dangerous.
Temperatures are expected to be over 70 degrees with 10 miles per hour winds blowing straight out to center field. We are getting good hitting conditions for two offenses that are red hot at the plate against two pitchers who do not miss a ton of bats.
Pick: Over 8.5
