Cleveland Guardians Betting Preview: Guardians to Make Gausman Work
This is the second time this week I get to analyze this Guardians team, and despite them being shutout by Peter Lambert and company the other day, not much has changed. We saw the high contact and flyball rate come to fruition in last night's opener as they took Game 1 of this series against Toronto, 8-6.
This Cleveland lineup is sneaky good, as they hold the sixth-highest contact rate, are eighth in walk rate, and hold the sixth-lowest strikeout rate. This lineup has the discipline and skill to make opposing pitchers work, and that's what they need to do against a veteran in Kevin Gausman.
To his credit, Gausman has looked tremendous through his first few starts, pitching to a 2.86 ERA and generating a ton of swings on pitches outside the zone. However, his first pitch strike rate is below average at 61.1 percent.
If he cannot get ahead, this Cleveland team will put the ball in play frequently in hitters' counts. We have yet to see this impact Gausman in the run column, but it certainly limits his strikeout upside this afternoon.
Toronto Blue Jays Betting Preview: Jays Looking for a Jolt
The reigning American League Champions are off to a 10-15 start, and it's largely due to the power outage we've seen throughout this lineup. The Blue Jays have the fifth-lowest ISO in the majors and are in the bottom 10 in hard-hit and barrel rate.
Now, their amount of contact has masked this, as many bats in the order have decent averages, but it's very hard to string together hits in today's game, and we are bound to see their lack of pop impact the run column.
This afternoon, their bat-to-ball skill will be tested by Joey Cantillo. Cantillo has looked nasty at times this season as he comes into this outing with a 29.1 percent strikeout rate.
Although he is not without his flaws. Cantillo has generated the bulk of his strikes on whiffs in the zone, and that is not what the Jays do. So, if they can remain disciplined, they will get in hitters' counts and may be able to generate traffic via free passes, but the jury is still out as to whether they have the power to cash in on those RBI opportunities.
Guardians vs Blue Jays Pick, Betting Analysis
This matchup features two quality arms facing lineups with plenty of talent to match them. While fading Cantillo in the strikeout column is very justified, with his total at 4.5, the matchup has already baked out much value.
However, Gausman is getting a bit too much respect here. We've gone over how great he's looked, but the Guardians are a team that can exploit the small issues we've seen from him.
Fade Gausman directly as the Guardians are primed to work the count and put a large majority of balls in play against him.
