The Yankees and Astros played a pair of tight, well played ball games in Houston, both of which the Astros won. Now the series shifts to New York for as many as three games if necessary.
The Yankees are looking to make this a series again after falling behind two games. In order to do that, they'll have to actually win one of these low scoring games for which the Yankees and Astros seem destined.
The Yankees' lineup isn't at full strength without hitters like DJ LeMahieu and Andrew Benintendi (Matt Carpenter also seems to be playing hurt) while the Astros' pitching is so outstanding they can win games scoring only three runs like they did in Game 2.
Let's build a same game parlay around this afternoon's pivotal game to try to mind optimal value.
The Parlay (+350):
- Under 6.5 Runs
- Gerrit Cole 7+ Strikeouts
- Yankees Moneyline
Same-Game Parlay – Astros vs. Yankees Game 3
Under 6.5
These teams haven't been scoring runs. In Houston, we saw a few balls lose steam at the warning track rather than carry over the fence for home runs.
While that could change as the series shifts to New York, where the weather isn't as cold as you might assume for this time of year, both teams have good starting pitchers on the mound and rested bullpens behind them.
I'm looking for another low scoring game here as the Yankees offense relies on a few of their studs and Harrison Bader and they have Gerrit Cole on the mound.
Gerrit Cole 7+ Strikeouts
Speaking of Cole, he's coming off one of the most important performances of his career. He faced down the Guardians in Cleveland in Game 4 of the divisional round, which allowed the series to go back to the Bronx where the Yankees were also able to pull out Game 5.
Cole is a big reason the Yankees have made it this far and when he was hurt in the playoffs last year they faltered as their season ended in the Wild Card Game.
This team goes as he goes right now and even though I only have him projected for 6.5 strikeouts I'll lean into the over because Cole has to have an exceptional game here with his back against the wall at home against his former team.
Yankees Moneyline
I don't believe the Astros are good enough to sweep the Yankees. Houston has a tremendous pitching staff, but its lineup has a lot of the same problems the Yankees lineup has except it only have one significant injured player missing in veteran outfielder Michael Brantley.
The Astros are good enough to win the series, but given that they have a 2-0 lead in the series already, they really only have to win one of the three games in New York to send the series back to Houston in an advantageous position.
That's what I believe ultimately happens in this series and it starts with Cole striking out at least seven in a low scoring Yankees victory tonight.
