The Houston Astros threw a combined no-hitter for the second time in World Series history on Wednesday night, evening the series against the Philadelphia Phillies at two apiece.
Game 5 poses as Philly’s last home game of the Fall Classic and a must-win before heading back to Houston. It’ll be a bullpen game led by Noah Syndergaard for the Phillies, while Justin Verlander takes the mound and looks to rebound from a poor Game 1 performance.
Which team will take Thursday night’s bout and find themselves one win away from a championship?
Here’s a same-game parlay for Game 5 of the World Series:
The Parlay (+584):
- Phillies ML (+134)
- Bryce Harper o1.5 Total Bases (+135)
- Yuli Gurriel to Record a Hit (-240)

Same-Game Parlay – Astros vs. Phillies Game 5
Philadelphia Phillies ML
Do I hate the idea of backing Noah Syndergaard? Yes, I absolutely do.
But this is the final game of the season at Citizens Bank Park and a must-win for the Phillies. The crowd is going to be loud and fresh off a no-hitter, the Phillies bats are going to be extra motivated out of the gate.
They also draw a favorable matchup against Justin Verlander. Now heading to a hitter-friendly park, Verlander gave up five runs across five innings in Game 1 of the World Series.
In eight World Series appearances, Verlander has a 6.07 ERA in 43 innings. In those starts, his team has walked away with the win just once, when the Astros scored in the eighth and ninth to force extras in an eventual win against the Dodgers in 2017.
I trust Rob Thomson in this situation here. He has managed Syndergaard extremely well and will likely limit him to once through the Astros lineup, similar to Atlanta. It’ll be all hands on deck for the Phillies, who will have every bullpen arm available.
Given the inconsistency of Verlander, I think the Phillies are undervalued here.
Bryce Harper Over 1.5 Total Bases
In correlation with Phillies moneyline, I’m backing Bryce Harper to get back on track on Thursday night.
Harper has been the best hitter the entire postseason. In 15 games, Harper has gone over this prop 11 times (73.3%). He had a pair of hits against Houston in Game 1 and is 2-for-4 on his total bases prop in the World Series.
Bryce Harper has the most success of any Philly hitter against Verlander and is 3-for-8. If there’s one hitter I trust in any given situation, it’s the former MVP and heartbeat of this Phillies team.
Hitting in the middle of the lineup. Harper is rarely pitched around. He’s walked just four times in 61 plate appearances. Nearly 60 percent of his hits have gone for extra bases, too.
The day after the Phillies got no hit, I expect Harper and the offense to get back on track here. At plus money, I’ll continue to ride Harper, who has been extremely profitable prop wise the entire postseason.
Yuli Gurriel to Record a Hit
Rounding out the same-game parlay, we’re backing the hit machine Yuli Gurriel.
The 38-year-old veteran has yet to strike out in 46 at-bats and leads the Astros with 16 hits (.348 AVG) in 11 games. He’s had multi-hit games twice in the World Series and has been on-base in all but Game 2.
While he’ll only face Syndergaard once, Gurriel is a perfect matchup. Syndergaard ranks in the bottom 15 percent of all pitchers in xBA and strikeout rate. That’s perfect against a hitter like Gurriel, who consistently puts the ball in play.
Good things happen when you make contact, and that’s what Gurriel has shown here in the Fall Classic. I wrote about taking a long shot on Gurriel at +1300 to record the most hits in the World Series and he’s currently tied for first.
I’d back the hot hand here and fully expect Gurriel to get a hit in one of his four at-bats on Thursday. He also does not walk — just once all postseason — which also provides a nice boost. He loves to swing the bat.
