The Los Angeles Angels and Baltimore Orioles get us started Thursday as they wrap up their series. Both lineups have shown their prowess as we've had double-digit run totals in two of the past three games.
One of the men tasked with taming these hot bats will be the Angels' Tyler Anderson. Anderson has had a rough go of it through his first seven starts and it remains to be seen if he can rekindle the success he had last season with the Dodgers.
As for the Orioles, they will throw a Tyler of their own. Tyler Wells will make his eighth start of the year, and he's been excellent thus far. His 2.68 ERA and 0.72 WHIP are nothing to scoff at, but can he stay sharp this afternoon?
Let's take a closer look to find out as we uncover the best bet for this matchup.
While the Angels have spent years coming up short despite having two generational talents, fans should be optimistic this time around as the lineup has finally proven it can support Mike Trout and Shohei Ohtani. Anaheim ranks ninth in xWOBA and has the second-highest xBA in baseball.
However, the Angels will be tasked with solving Wells. The Orioles right-hander has found tremendous success despite not missing many bats or generating a ton of soft contact. Wells has a deep arsenal, but his changeup has been his out pitch this season.
That changeup has 19% more horizontal break than an average change and will be tough on the Angels lefties. Additionally, Wells has excellent command and is able to tunnel the rest of his arsenal off his fastball.
So, while the Angels' bats have been solid, Wells may have the recipe to quiet them.
The American League East has been a gauntlet as every team in the division is over .500. That was somewhat expected, but what wasn't expected was the Orioles sitting in second place. Baltimore's young core has propelled this team in the early going, and we should see the youngsters shine in this matchup.
The Orioles enter this matchup ninth in wRC+ and 10th in wOBA. However, they'll be going up against a lefty and those rankings are even better against southpaws as both jump to the No. 5 spot.
On top of Baltimore's ability to mash lefties, Anderson hasn't been good and has shown no signs of improvement. Anderson's xERA is 5.45 and he ranks in the bottom 35% of qualified pitchers in xBA and xSLG.
Angels vs. Orioles Betting Pick
The Baltimore Orioles are in a great spot to take this series finale. They are primed to rake against Anderson as they've shown pop this season and have tremendous splits against lefties.
As for their starter, some of the league's best lineups have yet to solve Wells, and the Angels will have a tough time trying to crack the run column.
Back the Orioles on the moneyline, but don't be afraid to sprinkle a bit on their run line as well.
