Dream vs. Fire Preview

Atlanta and Portland square off in Oregon, with each team sitting just a half-game out of first place in the WNBA standings.

The East-leading Dream concluded a brief two-game trip after suffering a 96-81 setback in Minnesota on Wednesday. It was Atlanta’s first road loss and marked the only time all year the Dream failed to outscore an opponent in the fourth quarter.

Most Valuable Player contender Allisha Gray led the way with 21 points, including five made 3-pointers. Gray ranks fourth in the WNBA with 21.7 points per game and paces an Atlanta offense loaded with talent. She’s supported by Rhyne Howard (17 PPG), standout defender Angel Reese (12.3 PPG, 10.8 RPG), and Jordan Canada (11.8 PPG, 6.8 APG, 2.3 SPG).

Led by Coach of the Year favorite Karl Smesko, Atlanta has quickly emerged as one of the league’s most complete teams and enters this matchup among the favorites to contend for the Commissioner’s Cup.

Portland, meanwhile, has won three straight. Wednesday’s 71-61 win over Connecticut opened a three-game homestand and showcased the defensive identity that has helped the expansion Fire exceed expectations early in the season.

Carla Leite scored 20 points in that win and leads Portland with 16.3 points a night. Bridget Carleton (15.3 PPG, 2.1 SPG) and Sug Sutton (11.3 PPG) also average double-figures, though Carleton is questionable for this tilt due to lower back soreness.

The Fire have become one of the league’s biggest surprises. They won their season series against the championship favorite Liberty, taking two of three meetings and proving they can compete with the WNBA’s elite.

One major differentiator in this game could come on the glass. Atlanta leads the league with 39.2 rebounds per game, while Portland ranks next-to-last at 27.9. The Dream also owns a substantial advantage on the offensive boards and allows just 30.5 rebounds per contest for a league-best 8.6 overall differential.

Dream vs. Fire Prediction

Atlanta enters as an 8.5-point favorite, creating the possibility of reduced fourth-quarter minutes for key starters.

That makes Angel Reese’s rebound prop particularly interesting.

For a player as dominant on the glass as Reese, backing an under is never comfortable. But at 12.5 rebounds, the number appears inflated relative to both her recent production and projected workload.

Reese collected 30 rebounds across her first two games of the season but hasn’t cleared 10 in any of the last four contests. While Atlanta’s rebounding advantage is significant, the possibility of a lopsided game could limit her opportunities if the Dream creates separation in the second half.

Action Pro projects Reese for 10.76 rebounds and grades the play with a 14.9% edge.

Given her current trend and the potential for reduced minutes in a game, Atlanta is expected to control, and the under offers value.

Best Bet: Angel Reese Under 12.5 Rebounds (-130)
