Devils vs. Bruins Preview

New Jersey Devils

An underwhelming offense is a key reason the New Jersey Devils will miss the postseason. Entering this matchup, New Jersey ranks 26th in the league in goals scored per game.

Finishing has been the primary issue, as the Devils rank 31st in shooting percentage. However, the defense has been more effective.

By limiting high-danger scoring chances, New Jersey ranks 11th in expected goals against per 60 minutes (xGA/60). Supporting that defense is goaltender Jake Allen, who is expected to start.

Through 37 appearances this season, Allen has a .904 save percentage and a 2.74 goals-against average.

Boston Bruins

Allen’s success could continue against the Boston Bruins, a team that struggles to generate high-danger scoring chances. This season, Boston ranks 22nd in expected goals for per 60 minutes (xGF/60).

Despite that weakness, the Bruins have clinched a playoff spot, largely due to goaltender Jeremy Swayman. While he is unlikely to win the Vezina Trophy, he is a strong candidate to be among the finalists.

Through 54 appearances this season, Swayman is 30-18-4 with a .906 save percentage and a 2.76 goals-against average.

Devils vs. Bruins Prediction

Swayman’s strong play is likely to continue against New Jersey, a team he has performed well against. In seven meetings, he owns a .920 save percentage and a 2.38 goals-against average.

He should be in a favorable position for another solid outing against a team that has struggled offensively and has little to play for.

Additionally, there have been six or fewer total goals scored in four of Swayman’s past six starts against the Devils.

Pick: Under 6.5 (-122 at DraftKings | Play to -130)
