Wisconsin Badgers 2023 Season Preview

The Wisonsin Badgers welcome new head coach, Luke Fickell, in the 2023 season. Fickell hopes to reestablish Wisconsin as the dominant force in the Big Ten West, and he appears to have the personnel in place to do so this season.

Offensively, the Badgers also have a new OC in Phil Longo, who is known for is passing attack. Despite his "Air Raid" roots, Longo has assured the faithful at Camp Randall that they will continue to lean on star RB Braelon Allen in 2023. But, don't be surprised to see Wisconsin's offense try to air it out more than usual. Tanner Mordecai, a transfer from SMU, will lead the Badgers offense as the new starting QB. His previous success airing it out at SMU should prove to fit nicely with Longo's tendancies as a play caller. Not to mention, the Badgers have bolstered their WR corp with four transfers in the offseason. Wisconsin ranked 74th in the nation last year in terms of scoring offense, putting up 25.3 points per game. The goal will be to surpass that in the coming season with the new set of weapons on-hand.

The true strenght of this Wisconsin team in 2023 could be on defense, which is returning eight starters from last season. New Defensive Coordinator, Mike Tressel, will be tasked with blending an old system with Fickell's new scheme. However, most think it shouldn't be much of an issue with the likes of Maema Njongmeta leading the way at linebacker. Wisconsin's defense ranked 24th in the country in 2022, allowing just 21.9 PPG.

Wisconsin are the presumptive favorites to win the Big Ten West in 2023, and fourth overall to win the Big Ten Conference title at consensus odds of +797.

Betting on the Wisconsin Badgers

There are a variety of options to bet on the Wisconsin Badgers in the 2023 season. Here are a few of the most common and popular bet types to consider.

  • Point Spread
  • Moneyline
  • Over/Unders
  • Props
  • Future Odds

Wisconsin Spread

Betting point spreads are wagers based on the expectation that a team will win or lose by a certain number of points. The Badgers went 6-7 against the spread last year. Here’s an example of how the spread works from a regular season game against the Minnesota Golden Gophers:

  • Wisconsin -7 (-113)
  • Minnesota +7 (-110)

In this situation, the Golden Gophers are 7 point underdogs against the Badgers. If Wisconsin wins the game by eight or more points, a $113 wager on the Badgers would earn a payout of $100. If Minnesota won the game outright or lost by six points or less, a $110 wager would net $100.

In this particular example, Minnesota beat Wisconsin 23-13. This means that Wisconsin did not cover the spread.

Wisconsin Moneylines

With a 7-6 overall record in 2022, the Badgers were a fairly strong team to back in moneyline bets. A moneyline wager is simply picking which team will win a given contest outright. Even though a moneyline is just a bet on who wins the game, not all moneyline bets pay the same. Here's an example of a moneyline bet using the same Wisconsin vs. Minnesota game from 2021:

  • Wisconsin -300
  • Minnesota +235

The minus (-) and plus (+) signs distinguish the favorite from the underdog, making Wisconsin the favorite in this scenario. Odds can be understood more clearly if you think in terms of $10 or $100 increments. A wager on the Badgers odds would mean every $300 bet nets $100. And it's the opposite for underdogs: Here the Minnesota moneyline was set at +235, meaning a $100 wager would profit $235 if they won.

Wisconsin Over/Unders

Over/under, also called point total, is a wager placed on the combined scoring of a single game. Bookmakers come up with a number and you can either bet that both teams will combine to score over that particular number or under it. Here’s how it works:

When the Badgers played the Golden Gophers in 2021 the over/under was set at 39 points. A wager on the over would require Wisconsin and Minnesota to score 40 total points or more to win. Betting the under is an expectation that the two teams would score 38 or fewer points. It's also possible for the bet to push, which would happen if the game finished with exactly 39 points scored.

With a final score 23-13, a bet on the under would have won in this particular matchup.

The Badgers hit the over on 53.9% of their games in 2022 (7-6).

Wisconsin Prop Bets

Player props are ideal bets for those who love to play fantasy football since they just rely on the stats of individual players. The bet is simple: Pick a player, or players, select a stat category, and bet whether the chosen players will go over or under the designated line. Bettors also have the option to wager on season-long prop bets as well.

Some props you could make on the Badgers in 2023 include QB Tanner Mordecai passing completions, RB Braelon Allen rushing touchdowns, and many other.

Wisconsin Futures

A futures bet is a wager that will decided based on a result that takes place later in the season. Future bets can be made on both team and individual player outcomes. Some examples of Wisconsin Badgers futures for 2023 include:

  • Wisconsin Badgers to win the Big Ten
  • Wisconsin Badgers to win the National Championship
  • Braelon Allen to win the Heisman

Because college football futures are so hard to predict, bettors can expect highly favorable odds with sizeable payouts should they win.

How to Bet on the Wisconsin Badgers

While legal sports betting does exist in Wisconsin, it is quite limited. Sports betting in Wisconsin is currently limited to nine locations within the state and initial deposits must be made at a retail location. Mobile sports betting is currently not available at all within state borders.

For those residents of Wisconsin who want to get in on the action despite limited sports betting options, PrizePicks, a DFS provider, is a great alternative. New users can claim a deposit match on up to $100 using the free code "ACTION".
