Wisconsin Badgers 2024 Season Preview
The Wisconsin Badgers head into Year 2 of the Luke Fickell era aiming to take another step forward. Last season, the Badgers posted a 7-6 mark for the second consecutive year.
The road to an uptick in victories will be daunting as Wisconsin has matchups vs. Alabama, Penn State, Iowa and new Big Ten programs USC and Oregon.
Quarterback Tyler Van Dyke, who transferred from Miami, is a central figure for Fickell in his second season in Madison. Van Dyke will compete with Braedyn Locke for the starting position. Van Dyke has been uneven since bursting on the scene as the 2021 ACC Rookie of the Year but this change of scenery could revitalize him.
The Badgers will also have to replace highly productive running back Braelon Allen, who is now in the NFL. Oft-injured Chez Mellusi goes into his sixth college year as the primary replacement. Oklahoma transfer Tawee Walker will also get a fair share of carries.
Second-team All-Big Ten selection Will Pauling returns as Wisconsin’s top wide receiver. Bryson Green and Trech Kekahuna will be solid targets as well.
The offensive line returns three starters and the hope is that continuity will alleviate the previous pass protection woes.
Meanwhile, Wisconsin added some quality defensive pieces in the transfer portal. William & Mary’s John Pius and Syrcause’s Leon Lowery should aid the pass rush.
The secondary is a strength with anchors in cornerback Ricardo Hallman and safety Hunter Wohler.Yet, the defensive line remains a question mark other than James Thompson Jr.
The newly expanded Big Ten will be even more competitive. However, expect Fickell to guide Wisconsin to another winning season and bowl appearance.
Betting on the Wisconsin Badgers
There are a variety of options to bet on the Wisconsin Badgers in the 2024 season. Here are a few of the most common and popular bet types to consider.
- Point Spread
- Moneyline
- Over/Unders
- Props
- Future Odds
Wisconsin Spread
Betting point spreads are wagers based on the expectation that a team will win or lose by a certain number of points. Here’s an example of how the spread works for a hypothetical regular season game against the Minnesota Golden Gophers:
- Wisconsin -7 (-113)
- Minnesota +7 (-110)
In this situation, the Golden Gophers are 7 point underdogs against the Badgers. If Wisconsin wins the game by eight or more points, a $113 wager on the Badgers would earn a payout of $100. If Minnesota won the game outright or lost by six points or less, a $110 wager would net $100.
In this particular example, Minnesota beat Wisconsin 23-13. This means that Wisconsin did not cover the spread.
Wisconsin Moneylines
A moneyline wager is simply picking which team will win a given contest outright. Even though a moneyline is just a bet on who wins the game, not all moneyline bets pay the same. Here's an example of a moneyline bet using the same Wisconsin vs. Minnesota example:
- Wisconsin -300
- Minnesota +235
The minus (-) and plus (+) signs distinguish the favorite from the underdog, making Wisconsin the favorite in this scenario. Odds can be understood more clearly if you think in terms of $10 or $100 increments. A wager on the Badgers odds would mean every $300 bet nets $100. And it's the opposite for underdogs: Here the Minnesota moneyline was set at +235, meaning a $100 wager would profit $235 if they won.
Wisconsin Over/Unders
Over/under, also called point total, is a wager placed on the combined scoring of a single game. Bookmakers come up with a number and you can either bet that both teams will combine to score over that particular number or under it. Here’s how it works:
When the Badgers played the Golden Gophers in 2021 the over/under was set at 39 points. A wager on the over would require Wisconsin and Minnesota to score 40 total points or more to win. Betting the under is an expectation that the two teams would score 38 or fewer points. It's also possible for the bet to push, which would happen if the game finished with exactly 39 points scored.
With a final score of 23-13, a bet on the under would have won in this particular matchup.
Wisconsin Prop Bets
Player props are ideal bets for those who love to play fantasy football since they just rely on the stats of individual players. The bet is simple: Pick a player, or players, select a stat category, and bet whether the chosen players will go over or under the designated line. Bettors also have the option to wager on season-long prop bets as well.
Some props you could make on the Badgers in 2024 include QB Tyler Van Dyke passing completions, RB Chez Mellusi rushing touchdowns, and many others.
Wisconsin Futures
A futures bet is a wager that will be decided based on a result that takes place later in the season. Future bets can be made on both team and individual player outcomes. Some examples of Wisconsin Badgers futures for 2024 include:
- Wisconsin Badgers to win the Big Ten
- Wisconsin Badgers to win the national championship
- Tyler Van Dyke to win the Heisman
Because college football futures are so hard to predict, bettors can expect highly favorable odds with sizeable payouts should they win.
