Illinois Fighting Illini 2023 Season Preview

The Illinois Fighting Illini, under the leadership of head coach Bret Bielema, is poised for an exciting 2023 season in the highly competitive Big Ten Conference. After shocking the Big 10 with an 8-4 record in 2022, the hopes are high in Champaign. But 2023 won't be without its challenges.

The offense enters a transitional phase, introducing former Ole Miss quarterback Luke Altmyer. He aims to succeed Tommy DeVito, with support from a solid offensive line boasting returning starters Julian Pearl, Isaiah Adams, and guard Zy Crisler. Versatile receiver Isaiah Williams leads a promising receiving group, including Pat Bryant and Casey Washington. The running back position looks to Josh McCray and Reggie Love III to fill the void left by Chase Brown's departure. Illinois will hope to improve on its offensive production from a year ago, only averaging 23.7 points per game (86th in the country).

Following coordinator Ryan Walters' departure, the defense has new leadership under promoted secondary coach Aaron Henry. Despite this change, standout performers Jer’Zhan Newton and Keith Randolph Jr. anchor a formidable defensive line, while the linebacker corps boasts talent in returnees like Tarique Barnes and Gabe Jacas. However, the secondary must rebuild after losing key contributors who played a pivotal role in interceptions and overall defense. The Illini boasted the second best defense in the country last season, holding opponents 13.8 PPG. Repeating this astounding feat will be difficult, but with the returning experience, many expect they can provide a similar result.

The Big Ten is one of the most competitive conferences in the country. Illinois will have to outdual the likes of Ohio State and Michigan to claim the title. Currently, the Illini have +3000 consensus odds to win the Big Ten in 2023.

Illinois Fighting Illini Point Spreads

Illinois posted an 8-5 record against the spread last season, making them a fairly reliable bet. Here’s an example:

  • Illinois +9.5 (-110)
  • Purdue -9.5 (-110)

If the Illini lose by a touchdown, then they’re said to have “covered” the 9.5-point spread, and bets on them win. Conversely, Purdue needs to win by 10 or more to cover. Teams expected to win (favored) always have a minus sign before their spread, and teams expected to lose (underdogs) always have a plus sign.

Illinois Fighting Illini Over/Unders

Bielema is known as a defensive-minded coach, as he was the D-line coach under Bill Belicheck and the linebackers coach for the Giants. If you think he can reshape an Illini defense that allowed 34.9 points last season, you might want to try betting the under on their over/unders.

Over/unders, or totals, are a way to wager on the total scoring in a game. Which team wins is irrelevant, so if the total was set at 55.5 against Purdue, a 31-24 (55 total points) loss for the Illini is a win for the under. Over bettors are hoping for 56 or more combined points in this scenario.

Illinois only hit the over on 33.3% of their games in 2022 due to their stifling defense.

Illinois Fighting Illini Moneylines

Moneylines pay off more on underdogs that win than on favorites, and Illinois was an underdog every game last season. For example, as a +185 dog against Rutgers, a $100 bet would pay a profit of $185. If Illinois was a -185 favorite, you would need to bet $185 to earn $100 in profit.

Illinois Fighting Illini Props

Player props are bets on one player's performance during a game. Examples of prop bets on Peters include over/under on his passing yards, touchdowns or completions, but other Illini will have their own props as well.

Illinois Fighting Illini Futures

Sportsbooks don’t think the Illini have much of a chance to win the Big Ten, giving them +3000 odds in the futures markets. Futures are frequently priced like moneylines, with significant underdogs given big payouts on end-of-season outcomes.

Other futures bets you could make on the Fighting Illini include their season win total, odds to win the national championship and odds for players to win certain awards.
