Akron Zips football is coming off back-to-back 2-10 seasons under head coach Joe Moorhead. Now in year three with the program, Moorhead looks to turn things around for the Zips.

The former Oregon Ducks offensive coordinator will have a lot of work to do as the Zips are toward the bottom of the MAC odds for the 2024-25 season. Akron football kicks off its season against the Ohio State Buckeyes, a team that sits near the top of both the national title odds and the college football betting power ratings, with the Zips lining up as +4000 underdogs.

Here’s how you can bet on Akron this season, and some key things to know.

Betting on Akron

There are any number of ways to bet on Akron football this season. There’s the aforementioned MAC futures as well as college football win totals. The Zips have an over/under win total of 3.5 on the many of the top sportsbooks on the market.

You can also wager on moneylines, point spreads, and over/under totals on Akron throughout the season.

Betting Akron’s moneyline

Akron went 2-10 on the moneyline last season as well as 2-10 on the field. Per our Bet Labs database, betting Akron in every game moneyline last season would have produced a -85.6% ROI and a loss of close to $900, if your unit size is $100.

So how does a moneyline work, exactly? Here’s how it might look at a sportsbook like DraftKings or FanDuel when the Zips take on the Bowling Green Falcons on Saturday, October 5:

  • Akron +150
  • Bowling Green -175

The minus (-) and plus (+) signs distinguish the favorite from the underdog, making Akron the underdog in this scenario. A wager on the Zips odds would mean every $100 bet nets $150 in profit (and your $100 back) if you win. And it's the opposite for the favorite: Here, the Bowling Green moneyline is -175, meaning a $175 wager would win $100 (plus your $175 back).

It’s not common for bettors to lay huge moneyline prices like -500, but moneylines like that are often used as parlay legs, which combine multiple bets together to increase your payout. You can use our parlay calculator to get a sense of what your payout looks like when you build a parlay. Or you can add bets to your bet slip via our college football odds page to compare parlay prices.

Betting point spreads

As Akron is often an underdog, you may be more interested in taking the point spread in the Zips’ games. A point spread is a bet on the margin of victory and is a great equalizer in sports betting. Teams like Akron are still expected to be about .500 against the spread since the market adjusts based on the estimated ability of each team, plus other factors like injuries and recent form.

Akron closes out the regular season with a matchup against the Toledo Rockets, a squad that is one of the favorites to win the MAC title. Here’s what the point spread might look like:

  • Akron +10.5 (-110)
  • Toledo +10.5 (-110)

There are two parts to every point spread – the spread itself (which is the expected margin of victory) and the odds (which is what your payout will be). In this example, Akron is a +10.5 underdog, meaning they can lose by up to 10 points or win the game outright to cover the spread. You’re laying -110 odds, meaning you must wager $110 to win $100.

If you’re unfamiliar with calculating odds, read up on how to use American odds or use our odds calculator.

Betting the total

The third major sports betting market in college football betting is the total, also known as the over/under. With an over/under total bet, you’re trying to predict whether or not the total number of points scored will be higher or lower than what’s listed by the sportsbook.

When Akron played Kent State on Nov. 1, 2023, the total was listed at 39.5. If you bet the over, you need the game to have 40+ total points. If you bet the under, you need 39 points or fewer.

  • Over: 39.5 (-110)
  • Under: 39.5 (-110)

With a 31-27 win for the Zips, the over hit in this game. In this case, let’s say you bet $110 on the over. Then, you won $100.

Akron player props & more

The availability of college prop bets varies by state, and the list of states has shrunk in recent years after several college betting scandals. If props are available, you’ll find things like yardage over/unders for specific players (passing, rushing, receiving), touchdown props, and more. The most bet college football prop bet is the Heisman Trophy market. Online sportsbooks will offer far fewer sports betting markets for college players than they will for the NFL for a variety of reasons.

If sports betting isn’t legal in your state or college football props aren’t offered, you can use a platform like PrizePicks to get in on the action. It’s regulated as DFS, and allows you to pick player statistics to be more or less than the listed total. You can combine more and more stats together for bigger payouts throughout the 2024-25 college football season.
