Georgia Southern vs Nevada Preview

Georgia Southern Betting Preview: Will Defense Show Up?

Georgia Southern opened the season with an uninspiring defensive performance. The offense did their part, but the lack of defensive stops resulted in a 56-45 Boise State win.

It took the Eagles offense a full quarter to get going, as Georgia Southern trailed Boise State by 14-0 at the end of the first period.

The Eagles' offense went punt-fumble-punt in their first three drives, but after that, the offense was stellar. The Eagles scored on seven of their final 10 drives and tallied six touchdowns in the final three quarters.

Dual threat quarterback JC French was the primary weapon, and Georgia Southern will lean on him heavily all season.

French attempted 50 passes and finished with 322 yards through the air and two touchdowns. He also chipped in 39 yards rushing on 16 carries and finished as the Eagles' leading rusher.

That could be a problem going forward as lead running back Jalen White just couldn't get going. He notched 35 yards on 11 carries and had to grind out most of his yards. If we remove one 18-yard run, he averaged 1.7 yards per carry on the day.

However, Georgia Southern's biggest issue is the defense, which was absolutely thrashed by Boise State's rushing attack. Georgia Southern allowed 10.6 yards per carry and a total of 371 rushing yards on 35 attempts.

Heading on the road to Nevada, it'll be interesting to see how the Eagles respond.

Nevada Betting Preview: Rushing Attack Should Find Success

Nevada has been undervalued by the sportsbooks through two weeks.

The Wolf Pack have covered both of their games with ease, nearly pulling off a major upset of SMU in Week 0 and then coming from behind to beat Troy in Week 1.

They have shown a balanced attack on offense, throwing for 164 yards per game and rushing for 181 yards per game. Nevada can use multiple players in the run game and features leading running back Savion Red alongside quarterback Brendon Lewis.

Against the Georgia Southern defense, look for Nevada to lean heavily into its running game.

Transfer defensive lineman Kristopher Ross has been an impact player on defense and made a key strip on Troy quarterback Goose Crowder to seal the game. Ross has the makings of a player who can make life difficult on French, and potentially even force a game-changing turnover.

Ultimately, Nevada has to be liking its chances at home, as long as it can establish the run early the porous Georgia Southern front seven.

Georgia Southern vs Nevada Pick & Prediction

Nevada has covered the spread in each of its past four games against teams from the Sun Belt conference.

Additionally, Georgia Southern has struggled mightily when favored and has failed to cover the spread in four straight games as a favorite.

Nevada will likely be able to find success on the ground, and, at home under the lights, the value is on the Wolf Pack to win.

Pick: Nevada ML (-105)
