Washington State Basketball

After an unbelievable 22-1 start, Gonzaga was victim to one of the biggest upsets of the season, falling to Portland as 23-point favorites

In his 26th season at the helm, Mark Few’s Bulldogs were cruising through their WCC schedule just like any other campaign, and looked to once again maintain their status as one of the best teams in the sport.

The Zags are entering dangerous territory after having barely scraped by both San Francisco and Saint Mary's on their home floor at the McCarthey Center, followed by an outright loss to a mediocre Portland team.

While the Bulldogs’ tournament resume has some impressive victories over the likes of Alabama, Kentucky and UCLA, it's tough not to look at their 40-point beatdown loss to Michigan with concern. With just seven games remaining on its regular season schedule, Gonzaga must impress if it still holds hope for a top-three seed in March.

Leading the charge for this Zags’ offense is Graham Ike, who's posting 19 points, along with just under nine rebounds a night. After beginning his collegiate career at Wyoming, Ike has been at the heart of Few’s core over the past three years, recording over 16 points and eight rebounds in each of his three seasons in Spokane.

Alongside Ike, Braden Huff is having a spectacular junior season as well, scoring nearly 18 points per game, along with 5.5 rebounds. After starting just four matchups in his first two years at Gonzaga, Huff has been in the starting lineup for 18 consecutive games in 2025-26.

Tyon Grant-Foster has had a pretty up-and-down first season in Spokane, recording over 11 points and four rebounds per contest thus far.

While the 6-foot-7 Gonzaga guard is projected to be a second-round pick in the upcoming 2026 NBA Draft, he's actually taken a pretty big step back offensively, having averaged over 15 and 20 points, respectively, in his last two years with the Lopes.

Few’s Zags rank inside the top 30 in the country in offensive efficiency, according to KenPom. While Gonzaga has ranked far higher in this metric over the past five seasons, it's still scoring over 88 points per game this season.

On the other end of the floor, the Bulldogs have actually been far more efficient, ranking 13th in college basketball in defensive efficiency. Ike has been a massive presence as a rim protector, making it very difficult for opposing frontcourts to find open looks near the basket.

Washington State enters this clash with an 11-14 overall record.

Cougars head coach David Riley is in his second season in Pullman after 10 years coaching as both an assistant and a head coach at Eastern Washington.

While Eastern Washington failed to make the NCAA Tournament in each of his three seasons at the helm, Riley won Big Sky Coach of the Year twice after leading the Eagles to consecutive regular season titles.

Despite missing the NCAA Tournament, Riley had a solid first season as head coach for Washington State, finishing the 2024-25 campaign with a 19-15 overall record. Unfortunately for Riley’s bunch, it's struggled far more in its second season, despite an even worse strength of schedule.

Leading the charge for this Cougars offense is 6-foot-3 freshman guard Ace Glass, one of the most surprising breakout stars in a loaded 2026 class.

Glass was just a three-star prospect entering the season, and he's proven to be a phenomenal scorer, posting over 16 points per game in his first collegiate season, while also converting on nearly 50% of his field goal attempts.

Riley’s frontcourt has also been decent thus far, with three Cougar forwards posting double-figure scoring efforts per game. All three of his forwards were European prospects, with 6-foot-7 Latvian junior Rihards Vavers leading the bunch in scoring with over 11 points per game.

Alongside Vavers, 6-foot-10 Irish forward ND Okafor has been a massive presence in the lane on both ends of the floor, averaging just shy of 11 points per game, along with over 1.5 blocks on average.

While the 6-foot-8 junior out of Finland, Eemeli Yalaho, has also been impressive offensively, all three of Riley’s forwards have been atrocious on the glass, with none of them averaging six rebounds per game.

This has been a massive problem for the Cougars, as they consistently get out-rebounded by teams they're far more talented than. Washington State averages just 35 rebounds per game, which ranks 283rd in college basketball.

Washington State vs. Gonzaga Betting Analysis

Last week’s loss to Portland was arguably the worst loss in the over 25-year career of Few. For a team already subject to substantial criticism given its extremely weak strength of schedule in the WCC every season, a defeat as a 23-point favorite is just more fuel for the fire.

I expect Few’s bunch to really push the pace in the first 20 minutes in order to build some early momentum in a game they should dominate on both ends of the floor.

Gonzaga should come out highly motivated to put last week’s upset loss in the past and to show out on its home floor, reasserting its dominance as top dog in the WCC.

My Pick: Gonzaga 1H -11.5 | Gonzaga -20
