TCU vs Florida College Basketball Betting Preview
TCU Basketball
TCU has to show it can compete against good teams. It began the season with a loss to New Orleans and is 3-1 since, with the loss coming to Michigan.
The Horned Frogs also have a defensive identity, sitting 44th in defensive efficiency. They make life difficult on the interior, holding teams to 43.7% shooting from inside the arc.
While TCU is smaller vertically than Florida, it has the interior beef to hang with the Gators' bigs. At the five, Xavier Edmonds stands 6-foot-8, 245 pounds, and elite defensive forward David Punch is 6-foot-7, 245 pounds.
That pair is giving up a lot of length to the 6-foot-11 Rueben Chinyelu and Alex Condon, but both have the strength to duel inside.
Jamie Dixon doesn't have a clear go-to scoring option as he's had in past years. Jayden Pierre, a transfer from Providence, is the team's leader with 12.2 points per game, but he's more of a secondary scoring option that's thrust into a bigger role.
Pierre's backcourt cohort — Brock Harding — has to score more. He sets the table well (5.2 APG), but he's shooting a woeful 34% from the field.
The Horned Frogs' offense is basically "shoot 3s and pray for an offensive rebound," which is the style of the Buzz Williams-era Texas A&M squads. They shoot 33% from downtown, with 42% of their shots coming from deep.
Florida Basketball
The Florida Gators have gotten off to a fairly disappointing start. They sit 4-1, but Arizona thoroughly outplayed them, and they nearly lost to Florida State.
Still, it's tough to call a team disappointing if they're 4-1.
I have some concerns about the reigning champs, though.
I expected some offensive regression. Losing a trio of NBA guards in Will Richard, Walter Clayton Jr. and Alijah Martin is a lot to replace in one offseason. The Gators brought in Xaivian Lee and Boogie Fland to replace the former stars, but both have been awful.
Most transfers who go up from the mid-major level have to endure some level of growing pains. Lee has dealt with severe growing pains coming from Princeton. He's averaging just 7.6 points per game on 22% shooting and 17% from deep.
There isn't a lot of guard depth behind Lee, so Florida has to live with the results.
Meanwhile, Fland is used to SEC ball since he played at Arkansas last year. However, he's known for being streaky, and he's shooting 38% from the field and 20% from 3-point range.
The saving grace for the brutal shooting Gators is their ability to chomp on glass and grab offensive boards, as they rank fourth with a 45% offensive rebound rate.
The big-man group is among the best in America. The Gators start Thomas Haugh, Condon and Chinyelu, each of whom is terrific on the glass.
While Florida is a work in progress on offense, it's elite on the defensive end. The Gators rank sixth in defensive efficiency, while limiting teams to 40.9% from 2-point range and 24% from downtown.
TCU vs. Florida Betting Analysis
I wanted to take TCU, but its lack of interior size scares me a bit.
Florida just has way more height compared to TCU, and that'll help on the glass.
The Frogs' identity is crashing the glass due to the lack of offensive talent.
The under is the call for me.
Florida will try to push the pace, as it ranks 30th in adjusted tempo.
TCU would prefer a slower-tempo contest, as it ranks 205th in adjusted tempo.
Coach Todd Golden wants to run-and-gun a bit, but his team is incapable of doing the "gun" part of the equation.
My Pick: Under 155.5 (Play to 151.5)
