Michigan State vs. Maryland NCAAB Preview

No. 8 Michigan State (22-5, 13-3) squares off with host No. 16 Maryland (21-6, 11-5) in a major matchup of two of the top three teams in the Big Ten.

Michigan State is tied with No. 15 Michigan for the top spot in the conference, while Maryland is just two games behind in third place.

Maryland is the top-rated Big Ten team in the NET Rankings at No. 11. Michigan State is 10th in KenPom and EvanMiya.

Most recently, the Spartans made another impactful statement, with a 75-62 victory at Michigan on Feb. 21.

Michigan State began Big Ten play with nine consecutive victories, then dropped three of four, but are now on a three-game winning streak. The Spartans are eighth in KPI thanks to going 8-4 in Quad 1 games and 5-1 in Quad 2 contests.

Michigan State is elite on both ends of the court thanks to its depth. The Spartans have 10 players averaging at least 15 minutes. Michigan State is No. 12 in adjusted defensive efficiency and No. 23 in adjusted offensive efficiency.

Guards Jaden Akins and Jase Richardson have each responded with timely contributions in the backcourt for the Spartans. Freshman guard Jeremy Fears Jr. is fourth in the nation in assist rate (41.3%) and will keep Michigan State's offense on track in a hostile road environment.

Maryland has to box out junior forward Jaxon Kohler, who's first in offensive rebounding percentage and fifth in defensive rebounding percentage in the Big Ten.

Maryland is imposing at the Xfinity Center, boasting a 16-1 home record. The Terrapins have won four in a row and are 10-2 in their last 12 games.

The explosive Terrapins are second in the Big Ten in points per game (83.7) and are lot more reliant on their starters than the Spartans.

The Spartans have to pay plenty of attention to freshman big man Derik Queen. The 6-foot-10 bruiser is potent in the paint and shoots 55% overall. Queen is a traditional post player who rarely extends his offense to the perimeter, as he hasn't taken a 3-pointer since Jan. 26.

Michigan State is seventh in the nation in 3-point defense (29%). That'll come in handy against sharpshooters like Selton Miguel (43%) Ja’Kobi Gillespie (42.5%) and Rodney Rice (37%).

Ultimately, Michigan State's depth will be the deciding factor against the talented but more thin Maryland roster.

Michigan State will cover the spread and you can sprinkle some on the moneyline.
