Indiana vs Purdue College Basketball Betting Preview
Indiana and Purdue meet in West Lafayette for game two of their annual two-game series.
In the first matchup this season, the Hoosiers took down the Boilermakers in Assembly Hall in semi-dominant fashion, leading by as many as 14 points. Indiana kept Purdue off the glass, won the turnover battle and went 12-of-33 from deep.
It’ll look to repeat that performance in a hostile environment and bounce back from a 20-point loss to Illinois.
Indiana knows it can take advantage of Purdue in ball screens. Expect head coach Darian DeVries to go to his pick-and-roll actions early and often while mixing in his usual dose of cutting and off-ball screening.
Purdue struggles with big, athletic wings, and while Indiana isn't the most athletic bunch, it does have large perimeter pieces in Tucker DeVries, Lamar Wilkerson and Nick Dorn. Each can take advantage of the sagging Purdue defense and beat the Boilers over the top.
Meanwhile, Purdue enters this game off a home loss to the juggernaut that is Michigan, ending its four-game winning streak in the process.
The Boilers left points at the free-throw line in the first game against the Hoosiers, didn’t shoot to their standard and didn’t put up enough resistance on the defensive end, allowing 1.17 points per possession.
They need to win the physicality battle. Indiana isn't an overly athletic team — the type Purdue has struggled with all season — and yet the Hoosiers matched it pound for pound on the glass in the first meeting.
The Boilers will look to play through the post again, especially through Trey Kaufman-Renn, who dominated with 23 points on 9-of-14 shooting. Kaufman-Renn has the block advantage, but frontcourt teammates like Oscar Cluff need to step up in the rebounding and finishing departments.
Braden Smith should be his usual self, navigating the half-court off-ball screens and finding open shooters or post players. Indiana was able to bother Smith in the first game, using pesky on-ball defenders and perimeter length to slow him down.
Purdue is no doubt hungry to avenge its loss to its hated rival, and the Boilers will have plenty of motivation to respond after Michigan embarrassed them Tuesday.
Expect a locked-in Purdue squad that fires on all cylinders and scores efficiently against a bottom-half Big Ten defense.
