Indiana Basketball

Indiana is off to a blazing start in the Darian DeVries era. The Hoosiers' exciting offense scored an impressive 1.40 PPP and shot 71% from two-point range in their win over Alabama A&M.

The Hoosiers have a clear go-to trio. It begins with the coach's son, Tucker DeVries, who is finally healthy after a while. He drilled four 3s and had 18 points in his Hoosier debut. The other two studs are Lamar Wilkerson, who flashed his unlimited range, en route to 19 points.

But the key in this game and in every game is Reed Bailey. He's the "center", although he's more of a skill player than a physical one. The transfer from Davidson scored 21 points against Alabama A&M. I just love the way DeVries used his versatile big man. He let him make decisions as a passer to set up shooters and gave him good looks to score.

All five Hoosiers' starters can dribble, pass, and shoot. They have two PGs in Tayton Conerway and Connor Enright to go with that outstanding trio.

The major concern for Indiana is rebounding and post defense. Teams that want to pound the paint probably want to face the Hoosiers. Bailey lacks the strength to contain opposing bigs one-on-one. He makes up for his defensive issues with his offense, but DeVries has to find a way to stop opposing bigs. Another option when Indiana needs defense is Sam Alexis, who scored 17 points with eight boards.

Marquette Basketball

Marquette won its first game of the year over Southern, 100-82. While the result is standard, what is surprising is that Southern scored 1.02 PPP on what should be an elite defense. The Golden Eagles were a bit too aggressive, sending Southern to the line 29 times — of which it hit 20.

The Golden Eagles' offense stole the show, scoring 1.27 PPP. I was a bit surprised, but they just dominated at the rim. All five scorers reached double-digits — and Chase Ross scored 23 points. For Marquette to put up more strong offensive games, Ross has to be the guy.

Outside of Ross, I still don't know who the number two scorer is. Based on experience, the versatile big-man, Ben Gold makes sense. But Gold can't be the No. 2 guy on a tournament-level squad. So, Zaide Lowery making a jump would be a nice boost.

Indiana vs. Marquette Betting Analysis

I still don't know what to make of Marquette. I expect the defense to be a lot better moving forward, but I can't see them winning many games decided in the half-court.

The way this roster is built is that of one of Shaka Smart's VCU teams. They need to be tough, physical, and force turnovers.

In a lot of ways, 5-10 point guard Sean Jones Jr. is the key to this Marquette team. He's just a pest on the defensive end and lightning fast. Facing a veteran guard in Conerway won't be an easy test, so that'll be the matchup to watch.

My Pick: Indiana -2.5 (play to -4)
