Georgetown vs Maryland College Basketball Betting Preview
Georgetown Basketball
Life has been tough for Hoyas fans over the past decade. Georgetown’s proud basketball tradition feels like a distant memory entering the 2025 season. The program has reached the NCAA Tournament just once since 2016 and hasn’t won a March Madness game since 2015.
Head coach Ed Cooley begins his third season at the helm with growing expectations. Georgetown took a step forward last year, winning 18 games — its most since 2019 — and will look to build on that progress.
The Hoyas opened the new campaign in strong fashion, earning a comfortable 87-70 win over Morgan State. Arizona transfer KJ Lewis led the way with 14 points, while junior guard Malik Mack, one of the team’s key returnees, added 11 points and four assists.
Maryland Basketball
The Terps enter the 2025 season with first-year head coach Buzz Williams taking over the program. Williams replaces Kevin Willard, who departed for the Villanova job last spring. A proven winner at both Marquette and Texas A&M, Williams wasted no time reshaping the roster through the transfer portal.
Maryland found success under Willard, reaching the NCAA Tournament in two of his three seasons, but this year’s squad will have a completely new look.
The Terps are headlined by Mississippi State transfer Pharrel Payne, Virginia transfer Elijah Saunders and Indiana transfer Myles Rice.
Despite the overhaul, expectations remain modest, with Maryland projected to finish 13th in the Big Ten.
Still, the Terps opened their season on a strong note, defeating Coppin State 83-61 on Monday.
Georgetown vs. Maryland Betting Analysis
I expect a close, back-and-forth contest that ultimately favors the underdog. Georgetown enters the season underrated and capable of surprising a lot of people this year.
The addition of Lewis gives this Hoyas team a much-needed spark, and I expect both Lewis and Mack to continue their strong play in this matchup.
Maryland has plenty of talent, but this current roster remains largely unproven. Georgetown should be able to battle throughout and keep this one within the number.
My Pick: Georgetown +8 (Play to +5.5)
