Colorado State Basketball

The Rams hit the road with a bit of momentum after splitting their two-game homestand by blowing out Air Force and hanging tight with Utah State.

Their loss to the Aggies was because of two common issues that have plagued them many times this season: turnovers and the inability to contain opponents from mid-range.

San Diego State isn't exactly efficient from mid-range and may be due for some regression after a night of sharp shooting against UNLV.

On the other end of the floor, the Rams are a high-variance attack, as they're 22nd in 3-point rate nationally. But to their credit, they lead the nation in 3-point field goal percentage.

However, it remains to be seen if the Rams can stay hot from beyond the arc now that their scheme is clear-cut. San Diego State is middle of the pack against defending the 3, but regression is due, and each of the Rams' losses have included poor nights from beyond the arc.

I touched on how the Aztecs are a stark contrast to the Rams on the offensive end of the floor, but they're not without their faults.

They have a clear tendency to use their backcourt to generate mid-range looks, and that is a great area to attack Colorado State, as it's allowed opponents to shoot over 63% from that area of the floor.

Although much like their counterparts in this matchup, if they're forced outside their comfort zone, we could see struggles on the offensive end. San Diego State is solid from deep, but Colorado State knows how to defend the perimeter.

The Aztecs lack the size to bang in the paint with bigs, but if their guards penetrate and draw fouls, we've seen inconsistency from the charity stripe as well.

This is a spot where the Aztecs should look superior offensively, but whether or not they can execute against a team that has the tendencies to contain them puts a double-digit win in question.

Colorado State vs. San Diego State Betting Analysis

While the Rams have a path to cover this slightly inflated spread, the variance of their offense concerns me. San Diego State will make a concerted effort to contest shots from beyond the arc, but the Rams aren't going to stray from taking those shots.

On the other end of the floor, the Aztecs are consistent, but their lower 3-point volume and average pace have put a cap on their offensive ceiling. It'll also be interesting to see if the Rams can correct their mid-range issues defensively against a team that thrives in that area.

Lastly, the tempo of this matchup is likely to be slow, with the Rams sitting at 363rd in adjusted tempo and the Aztecs hardly pushing the pace (129th).

The slower pace, combined with streaky shooting, is a recipe for an under.

My Pick: Under 139.5
