Clemson vs Georgetown College Basketball Betting Preview
Clemson Basketball
Clemson has won 23 games in each of the last three seasons, making the NCAA Tournament in each of the last two campaigns. However, it underwent an extreme makeover in the offseason, as just three players returned from last season's squad.
Thus far, the Tigers have five double-digit scorers, with freshman Ace Buckner leading the team at 13.7 points per game.
Former Tiger RJ Godfrey transferred back to the school after a season at Georgia and is leading the team with 8.7 rebounds per game. He has one double-double already, along with Utah Valley transfer Carter Welling. They're both shooting over 70% from the field.
The Tigers haven't faced a difficult test yet this season, hosting three mid-majors at home. However, they've been dominant, winning all three games by at least 27 points. They haven't earned the attention of voters yet, but they're the No. 21 team in the country, according to KenPom.
The Tigers haven't shot the ball well from the outside yet, but they've been dominant inside, converting 62% of their 2-point attempts. Clemson has collected 38% of its offensive rebounds with Godfrey, Welling and senior forward Nick Davidson combining for 25 offensive rebounds thus far.
It's also particularly noticeable that the Tigers have committed just 14 turnovers through their first three games. They're currently second nationally in turnover percentage offensively.
Defensively, Clemson ranks seventh in Division I in effective field goal percentage defense. When you combine that with its slow pace, it's not hard to see why the Tigers haven't scored 60 points yet this season.
Georgetown Basketball
A once-proud Georgetown program has reached the NCAA Tournament just once in the last 10 years.
This season, it'll look to get back to the Big Dance behind a dynamic backcourt. Junior KJ Lewis was named to the Preseason All-Big East Second Team while junior Malik Mack received Preseason All-Big East Third Team honors.
The duo makes up two of the Hoyas' top three scorers this season, as Lewis is averaging 16.7 points and eight rebounds per game while Malik Mack is averaging 14.3 points and 4.3 rebounds a night.
The Hoyas already picked up a quality road win, defeating Maryland 70-60 last Friday. They also have double-digit victories over Morgan State and Binghamton at home.
Those victories have come without shooting the ball particularly well. Georgetown is 13-for-65 (20%) from 3 through its first three games and is 353rd in 3-point shooting percentage.
While the sample size is small, this doesn't appear to be a roster with a lot of shooters. No one on the roster has a season of college experience shooting above 37% from 3 on more than 50 attempts.
Instead, the Hoyas are averaging 38 points in the paint, with at least 30 points in all three games. They've also attempted at least 20 free throws in their first three affairs and are shooting 73.6% from the charity stripe.
Lewis is a strong downhill driver and is averaging 5.7 free throw attempts per game.
Additionally, like Clemson, the Hoyas have done a great job of protecting the ball, averaging just 7.3 turnovers per game.
Head coach Ed Cooley has prioritized locking down the paint at the other end. Georgetown ranks ninth in Division I in 2-point percentage defense and 20th in effective field goal percentage defense. It's averaging 8.3 blocks per game, led by St. John's transfer Vincent Iwuchukwu.
Clemson vs. Georgetown Betting Analysis
These teams appear to have a similar profile, but Clemson should have the edge, as it has a top-25 offense and defense, per KenPom.
This will be the Tigers' biggest test to date and the first road game for Brad Brownell's group in 2025-26. However, Clemson has proven capable of taking care of high-major opponents in non-conference play, with victories over Penn State, Alabama and TCU over the last few seasons.
Additionally, the ACC is off to a resurgent start in non-conference play, with victories by Duke over Texas, North Carolina over Kansas and Louisville over Kentucky. Georgetown isn't quite at the level of those other teams yet. However, I like Clemson to add to that list with a solid road victory over a Big East opponent.
My Pick: Clemson -2 (Play to -4.5)
