Clemson Basketball

Clemson is off to a 7-1 start to the season after snagging a pair of wins in its MTE over Feast Week. The Tigers' lone loss came in their only road contest (vs. Georgetown), and this is the second road test of the campaign for Brad Brownell's squad.

The Tigers are an offensive-first squad, ranking 27th in offensive efficiency. They shoot a fair amount of 3s, but they're around the middle of the pack nationally with a 33% 3-point percentage.

Meanwhile, they're terrific at scoring inside, shooting 57.8% from inside the arc. And it makes sense since Clemson has a bunch of solid bigs.

The top two scorers on Clemson's roster are forwards, as Carter Welling leads the team with 11.6 points per game and RJ Godfrey posts 11.3 points. Welling is the most reliable scorer on Clemson's roster, but it has nine players averaging between six and 11 points a night.

The Tigers' guards have performed better than I thought. While they don't have a Chase Hunter-level star, they have three reliable guards in Dillon Hunter, Jestin Porter and Ace Buckner. Porter scored 14+ points in three straight contests, but he's shooting it at a 35% clip from the field, which will need to improve.

The key to limiting a Nate Oats-coached offense is shutting down the perimeter jumper. Clemson holds teams to just 26.7% shooting from 3 this season, but we'll see just how good Clemson's perimeter defense actually is in this game.

Clemson also has a clear advantage in the rebounding department. The Tigers snag 36% of their own misses and hold teams to a 23% offensive rebounding percentage.

Alabama Basketball

Alabama was on fire during the Players Era Festival in Vegas. The Crimson Tide scored 85+ points in all three games and scored 105+ against Maryland and UNLV.

As usual, the Crimson Tide play one of the fastest tempos in America (eighth in adjusted tempo), and it also shoots 3s on 49.9% of their field goal attempts.

They shoot a strong 36% from deep, and all the floor spacing created from the marksmen allows the Crimson Tide to hit 63% from inside the arc.

A lot of up-tempo squads tend to struggle with turnovers. That's not the case for Alabama, though. It turns the ball over just 14% of the time (27th nationally).

Star guard Labaron Philon Jr. is the only Alabama player with multiple turnovers per game, and he always has the ball, so it makes sense that he turns it over often.

Philon is a very special talent, and he's the perfect representation of why the NIL era is good for college sports. Philon posts over 20 points per game and is one of the best isolation scorers in America. Philon and Aden Holloway account for close to 40 points a night.

I'm a bit concerned about Alabama's bigs. The Crimson Tide struggle to finish out defensive possessions, ranking 183rd in defensive rebounding rate. They also allow teams to shoot 49.3% from inside the arc and 32.8% from 3 — both of which are outside the top-100 nationally.

Clemson vs. Alabama Betting Analysis

I'm riding with the underdogs here.

Alabama will get points up, but Clemson is the type of squad that can make things tough on the Tide. The Tigers want to slow the game down, get their bigs involved and dominate the shot-volume battle.

That could keep this game fairly close, even on the road.

My Pick: Clemson +9.5 (Play to +8)
