Butler vs Virginia College Basketball Betting Preview
Butler Basketball
The Bulldogs are coming off a strong win over South Carolina, fueled by the one-two punch of Michael Ajayi and Finley Bizjack.
Ajayi is on his third school in as many years, having starred at Pepperdine before a year as a role player at Gonzaga. He’s back in the spotlight here, as the best wing player Thad Matta has on the roster.
More notably, he’s flashed athletically and stuffed stat sheets. He’s averaging more than 12 rebounds per game after hauling in 14 against the Gamecocks.
Bizjack is a lifer at Butler, as he's in his third season on campus. That feels like an anomaly these days, but it's paid off for the Bulldogs. The point guard has improved each year and looks like an all-conference performer thus far.
He’s made half of his 3s so far this season, which you might expect to regress if he were a lesser shooter. He made nearly 46% of his deep looks in Big East play last season, on 90 attempts.
He'll be the best guard on the floor in this game and could give Virginia trouble. The Hoos allowed Northwestern guard Jayden Reid to score 25 points, thanks in part to 12 free throws.
If Bizjack also proves difficult to slow down, Butler shouldn't have trouble scoring.
Virginia Basketball
Like any team with a new coach in 2025’s college basketball landscape, Virginia’s roster shook like an Etch-A-Sketch this summer and returned a blank slate. Of the 999 minutes played by the Cavaliers this season, just seven belong to a player on last year’s roster (junior Desmond Roberts).
Three of the Hoos' top five scorers this year are freshmen, two of whom came over from Europe.
The headliner among that group is 6-foot-9 Belgian Thijs De Ridder, who's averaging 19 points per game in his young college career. The only game he failed to top 20 points was a 38-point drubbing over Hampton.
De Ridder has also anchored Virginia on the glass, helping the Hoos grab offensive boards at the second-highest rate in the nation.
In Ryan Odom’s first season in Charlottesville, he’s built a team capable of imposing its will on the interior. The Hoos are earning free throws at a high level, winning on the glass and protecting the rim, to the tune of the seventh-most blocked shots in the country.
It looks different than the glacially-paced teams Virginia fans loved under Tony Bennett, but so far the results are the same. Virginia is unbeaten and looking like a top-five team in the ACC.
Butler vs. Virginia Betting Analysis
This game could be decided on the glass. Both teams rank sixth or better on the offensive glass this season, though both have largely grabbed those boards against low-level competition.
Butler is a better all-around rebounding team and has proven it against back-to-back power conference foes.
Beyond that, Butler's entire starting lineup is comprised of upperclassmen. I'm skeptical that the Virginia freshmen will continue their hot start, at least not to the same level of consistency they've shown to date.
Virginia is favored by more than two possessions here, which is a bit rich for my blood.
I'll take a Butler team fully capable of winning this game outright, with the points as a cherry on top.
My Pick: Butler +5.5 or Better
