Arizona State vs Arizona College Basketball Betting Preview
Arizona State Basketball
Arizona State finally snapped its four-game losing streak with a tight win over Kansas State on Saturday. The Sun Devils are 10-6 overall and 2-1 in conference play heading into their biggest game to date.
The key for Arizona State is to make things ugly. There's no doubt that a talent disparity exists here. The question is, can the Sun Devils' persistent full-court pressure cause enough problems for Arizona?
They force turnovers on 19% of possessions, but if the Wildcats break the pressure, they'll score easily. Arizona State struggles at defending field goals, ranking outside the top 220 in 2-point and 3-point field goal percentage.
Bobby Hurley needs his guards to show up. Moe Odum leads the team with 16 points and 6.4 assists per game. He excels at playing in pick-and-rolls and can get hot from deep, but he's inefficient.
Odum's backcourt mate is Anthony "Pig" Johnson, a speedy guard with rugged defense. That toughness and defense will need to guide Arizona State in this one.
Arizona State lacks the interior beef to hang with Arizona on the glass, as starting bigs Massamba Diop and Santiago Trouet tend to get beaten on the boards. The Sun Devils rank 252nd in defensive rebounding rate.
Also of note, sniper Bryce Ford missed Arizona State's last game, and without him, Allen Mukeba got the start. If Ford is out again, Arizona State will have only one real shooter in the lineup with Odum.
Arizona Basketball
Arizona is one of the few teams without a blemish on its record so far, posting a pristine 16-0 mark.
The Wildcats are the only team in the country that ranks in the top five in KenPom's offensive and defensive efficiency.
Very few teams can dominate the shot-volume battle like Arizona. It grabs offensive rebounds at 41% clip, while holding teams to a 24% offensive rebound rate.
Plus, the Wildcats play fast, and holding teams to one shot allows them to go on the run.
Keep an eye on the center rotation of Tobe Awaka and Mo Krivas. The 7-foot-2 Krivas is the starter, and he records a 16% offensive rebound rate. Awaka is the best offensive rebounder in the sport, so there's no let up on the glass.
Tommy Lloyd has five players who average between 10 and 14 points per game. The freshman duo of Koa Peat and Brayden Burries leads the way. This feels like a game where Peat explodes, as he can use his strength and quickness to navigate through Trouet at the four.
What I'll say about Arizona is that it knows its strengths. Shooting won't be what carries this team to the national title, so the Wildcats attempt 3s on just 28% of their shot attempts.
Jaden Bradley is often the forgotten man for Arizona. He's a stud point guard who averages 13 points and four assists per game, while improving to 52% from deep (on just 27 attempts).
But he'll do an excellent job holding Odum from scoring.
Arizona State vs. Arizona Betting Analysis
I'm laying the points with the Wildcats in this rivalry matchup.
I don't see how Arizona State can keep its heated rivals off the boards. Plus, the best way to try to beat Arizona is to slow it down and make it play in the half-court. Given that the Sun Devils are 70th in adjusted tempo, it's hard to believe they can do so.
The Cats are plenty capable of winning games by big margins. They took down San Diego State by 23, Auburn by 29, Kansas State by 25 and Alabama by 21.
My Pick: Arizona -21.5 (Play to -23)
