Rockets vs Hawks Lines & Betting Analysis
Spread
The Rockets are playing with tremendous confidence following three straight wins over Cleveland and Boston, the top teams in the Eastern Conference. Therefore, I recommend laying the six points at DraftKings with Houston as the road favorite.
Notably, the Rockets have covered the spread in four of their last five games.
Moneyline
Although I prefer to pass on the moneyline at -258, it could hold some value if utilized as a part of a same-game parlay.
Over/Under
The total is useless to me, given that my model projection of 227.2 points aligns with the current market number.
Rockets vs Hawks Preview & Prediction
The Rockets look ahead of schedule in Ime Udoka's second year as their head coach. Houston (31-14) entered the season with a win total of 41.5 and would need just 11 more wins to exceed that projection. Monday's victory over the Boston Celtics had the feel of a marker being laid down that the Rockets mean business during this campaign.
Houston even rallied from an 11-point deficit in the fourth quarter to come away with the win. Any time you limit the defending champions to 112 points, you're doing something right.
Moreover, the Rockets beat the Celtics at their own game by making more 3-pointers (17-15). It's noteworthy that Houston only ranks 23rd in 3-point field goals (12.4) and 26th in 3-point percentage (34.4%).
While such prolific numbers against Boston probably aren't sustainable, the good news for Rockets fans is that they have a top-tier defense that's good enough to keep the team above water, even if the offense is experiencing a bit of a blip.
Houston will face an Atlanta team that has lost five straight games. The Hawks have also failed to hit the century mark in back-to-back games, with their offense showing signs of stagnation.
If you look at Atlanta's last 10 games, the total is 3-6-1 to the under for a team that led the league in pace (103.74) during the span. Atlanta (104.22) plays at the second-fastest pace this season behind the Grizzlies (104.74).
Thus, the Hawks haven't changed stylistically during this recent stretch. They're simply struggling to make shots, ranking 27th in field goal percentage (42.8%) and dead last from the perimeter (29.1%).
As a result, the Rockets are among the teams opponents would want to avoid amidst a brutal slump.
Houston is just the third team ranked in the top four defensively that Atlanta will face this season. The other two meetings were against the Thunder and Clippers, and Atlanta lost both games by 25 and 26 points, respectively.
Given the Hawks' current form, a Rockets' win by margin looks increasingly likely.
Rockets vs Hawks Prediction & Parlay
After presenting my reasoning for the Rockets to cover the spread, I'll use their moneyline as almost a form of insurance when putting together my Bet365 same-game parlay.
Since I spoke at length about this Rockets defense, there's a correlated angle in play here if we fade a player prop involving Atlanta's Vit Krejci. At 24, Krejci is still finding his footing in the NBA and isn't exactly the first or second option in the Atlanta offense.
The former second-round pick averages 6.3 points with 2.4 rebounds and 2.7 assists. Krejci only attempts 5.2 shots per game, so he is a bit tentative in getting his shot off. His points + rebounds + assists (PRA) prop is set at 17.5, and that number feels a bit skewed due to some big performances against poor defensive teams like the Nuggets, Suns, Bulls and Raptors.
All four of those teams are ranked 19th or lower in defensive efficiency.
But when facing teams ranked in the top 10 for points allowed, Krejci has stayed under 17.5 points + rebounds + assists in 14 straight games. Considering that the Rockets fit the criteria of a top-10 defense, I like their chances of keeping this streak alive.
I'll also look to target Houston's Jalen Green to surpass his PRA prop of 29.5. The Rockets guard had a poor shooting night (3-of-13) against the Celtics, finishing with just 12 points.
However, I expect Green to rebound against an Atlanta team that ranks in the bottom 10 in points allowed.
Moreover, Green has exceeded 29.5 PRA in eight straight games against opponents like the Hawks, who fit the criteria defensively. On his last visit to Atlanta, Green racked up a triple-double with 26 points, 14 rebounds, and 10 assists.
Those fond memories should be enough to give Green the confidence to put on a big performance.
