Pistons vs Bulls NBA Preview

Last year, the Pistons pulled off one of the greatest turnarounds in NBA history as they tripled their win total in JB Bickerstaff’s first season.

They proved to be a tough out in the playoffs as well, pushing the Knicks to a grueling, six-game series.

While expectations are higher in Detroit this season, it is also a season of exploration as the team continues to build its long-term core around Cade Cunningham.

This offseason, the team did not agree to long-term extensions with pending restricted free agents Jaden Ivey and Jalen Duren. The two could enter this season with added motivation playing in contract years.

However, Ivey will miss the first few of weeks of the season after undergoing an arthroscopic procedure on his right knee.

Duren is part of one of the league’s best pick-and-roll combinations with Cunningham. He has averaged a double-double in each of the last two seasons, including 14 points and 15 rebounds per game against the Bulls last season.

Additionally, following his first healthy offseason in the NBA, many are projecting a leap for Ausar Thompson as well.

However, how far the Pistons will go this season will be determined by Cunningham.

In his fourth season, Cunningham averaged 26.1 points, 6.1 rebounds, and 9.1 assists per game, earning his first All-Star appearance and third team All-NBA honors. His well-rounded game at both ends also makes him a value bet for MVP at 70/1 odds.

Meanwhile, the Bulls are a team in transition after moving on from DeMar DeRozan and Zach LaVine over the past two seasons.

Following LaVine's trade last season, the team caught fire and won 17 of their final 25 regular season games. However, the end result was a third consecutive exit via the Play-in Tournament.

Josh Giddey averaged 14.6 points, 8.1 rebounds, and 7.2 in his first year with the team. The team committed to him to be their lead guard of the future with a four year 100-million-dollar contract extension this offseason.

The team did not move Nikola Vucevic in the offseason after much speculation. He is a player to watch tonight after averaging 19.5 points, 11 rebounds, and 2.8 made 3s against the Pistons last season.

However, the player I am most intrigued with on the Bulls is forward Matias Buzelis. The 21-year-old emerged as a double-digit down the stretch last season. He will enter the season opener having 19 points or more in four of five preseason games.

Pistons vs Bulls Prediction, Betting Analysis

After the Bulls won five of seven meetings in this series, the Pistons won and covered each of the last three meetings. They won those games by an average of 22 points and two of them were in Chicago.

Building off last season, the Pistons are the stronger defensive team in this matchup and they averaged 124.75 points per game against the Bulls last season.

While the Pistons will be without Ivey tonight, new acquisitions Caris LeVert and Duncan Robinson will be expected to pick up the slack.

Meanwhile, the Bulls will be without Coby White tonight as he recovers from a calf injury. The explosive scorer averaged 20.4 points per game last season.

As for tonight's parlay, Cunningham averaged 35.2 points and assists combined last season. He reached 35 combined in three of four games against the Bulls last season.

Duren had a double-double in three of four meetings last season as well. Adding Pistons moneyline to this tandem gets this parlay over +250.

Pick: Pistons -3 (-110)
