Rice Owls 2025 Season Preview

The Rice Owls enter the 2025 college football season looking to build on back-to-back bowl appearances—an impressive feat for a program often picked near the bottom of the American Athletic Conference (AAC). After finishing 6–7 in 2024 with a bowl game loss, the Owls have their sights set on getting back above .500 and becoming a more consistent force in the AAC.

The biggest storyline entering 2025 is the quarterback position. E.J. Warner, son of NFL Hall of Famer Kurt Warner, transferred from Temple and started for Rice in 2024. He threw for over 2,800 yards with 18 touchdowns, and his leadership will be crucial in helping the Owls improve their scoring offense, which averaged just over 23 points per game last season.

Defensively, Rice remains a work in progress, having allowed nearly 30 points per game in 2024. However, several returning starters in the secondary and a revamped linebacker corps should give the Owls a more balanced look this year.

The Owls’ 2025 schedule includes winnable games against North Texas, Tulsa, and UTEP, alongside tougher matchups like Memphis and UTSA. Another bowl trip is within reach if Warner and the offense can stay healthy and consistent.

Rice Owls Point Spreads

"Covering the spread" is a reference to a spread bet, which is a bet on how much a team will win the game by.

Here’s how an Owls spread might look:

  • Rice -10.5 (-110)
  • Sam Houston +10.5 (-110)

If the Owls win 28-10, they’re winners ATS, since they need to win by 11 points or more to cash spread tickets. Sam Houston, on the other hand, can cover with a win or loss of 10 or less points.

Rice Owls Over/Unders

Oddsmakers set the total at how many points they think will be scored, so it could be 49.5 for a game against Sam Houston, for example. If you took the under, a 28-20 final means your bet pays off no matter who wins the game. If you bet over, you’d need there to be at least 50 points scored between the two teams. Ties on the bet are possible, and they result in refunds.

Rice Owls Moneylines

Moneyline odds take into account how likely a team is to win the game and adjust payouts accordingly, a winning record doesn’t always mean a profit.

Rice defeating Sam Houston as a -410 favorite is fine, but a $41 bet pays out just $10. If you’re able to catch the Owls as a +300 underdog, though, a $10 bet on them profits $30. These bets are simplest to understand with $10 or $100 as a unit, but the math is the same regardless.

Rice Owls Props

Player props are bets on the stats put up by a player for a single game. You could bet on players' rushing or passing stats.

Rice Owls Futures

Rice is coming off a bowl season, which is a positive for the program. You can put your money down on a futures bet such as a quarterback to pass for more or less yards than expected for the season.

Futures are wagers that settle at the end of the season, and besides odds to win the conference, popular futures bets include players' odds to win certain end-of-season awards or over/unders on team wins throughout the year.
