2023 Masters Odds: Scottie Scheffler, Rory McIlroy Favored Over Jon Rahm

At the top of every sportsbook, you'll find the same three names in a different order. bet365 has Scottie Scheffler and Rory McIlroy tied as the favorites, followed by Jon Rahm. FanDuel has McIlroy-Scheffler-Rahm. DraftKings has it the same as bet365, with Rahm listed at +850 behind the top two (+700).

Rahm being third on the board speaks to just how good Scheffler and McIlroy are, and it sets the tone for what will be an elite field featuring golf's very best this week at Augusta National this week.

So, let’s break down the field.

All odds listed below are as of Sunday night.

The Favorites

There’s a trio up top that appears to have separated itself on the PGA Tour.

The difference between the three? McIlroy hasn’t won since October on the PGA Tour (he did win on the DP World Tour in late January) while Rahm and Scheffler have both won multiple times in 2023. Rahm won the Tournament of Champions and American Express in January before taking home the crown at the Genesis in February, while Scheffler has won the WM Phoenix Open and Players Championship.

There’s a trend here: Of the five “elevated” events on tour in 2023, Rahm and Scheffler have each won two. (Kurt Kitayama won the Arnold Palmer Invitational.) When the purses are at their biggest, the world’s top-two players, according to the World Golf Rankings, have shown up. (It’s worth acknowledging that Sam Burns won the WGC-Dell Match Play, but I didn’t include that because of the lack of stroke play.)

For all three, the Masters means something different at this point in their career.

For Scheffler, it’s a chance to add to his major-championship trophy case, which he started filling last year at Augusta. Since the start of 2022, no one has won more than Scheffler. Since 2007, though, there have been 15 winners in the 16 editions of the Masters. Only Bubba Watson has won it twice.

For Rahm, it’s something similar. For someone as good as the Spaniard, he needs to start adding more majors to his résumé. His worst finish at Augusta National is T27 (twice), which happened last year. Prior to that, he was in the top 10 four straight years.

A win at the Masters would also give Rahm a leg up on Scheffler, with whom it appears he’s destined to go neck and neck with for a long time. The Spaniard won his first major at the 2021 U.S. Open.

For McIlroy, it’s the career grand slam. He’s only seven years older than Scheffler and five older than Rahm, but he’s already done it all in golf — except win a green jacket. He has six top-10 finishes at the Masters in his last nine starts, and he famously made a thrilling charge to finish second last year.

The LIV Golf Stars

LIV Golf will have plenty of familiar names in the field this week at Augusta National, although not many are playing particularly well.

They aren’t playing too much either. LIV Golf is playing slightly more than once a month and while some players are staying active in Asia, the big names haven’t been seen from much this year. Dustin Johnson and Cameron Smith are Greg Norman’s biggest hopes for a Masters winner, but neither has played well this year for LIV.

Johnson, Sergio Garcia, Phil Mickelson, Patrick Reed and Bubba Watson are all former Masters champions, but only Johnson is anywhere near the top of the odds board at 28-1.

Smith is 20-1 at bet365, but you can get him at 21-1 at FanDuel. The Aussie has four top-10 finishes in his last five Masters starts. The next LIV player is Joaquin Niemann down at 55-1, followed by Brooks Koepka (66-1), Patrick Reed (70-1) and a trio at 80-1 (Mito Pereira, Louis Oosthuizen and Abraham Ancer). Bryson DeChambeau, Paul Casey, Sergio Garcia and Marc Leishman are at 90-1, closing out the LIV contingent at less than 100-1.

Seeking Their First Major

With the depth of talent in golf right now, either on the PGA Tour or in LIV Golf, there are plenty of elite players who are searching for their first majors.

Patrick Cantlay has the shortest odds among that group, tied with Smith at 20-1. He's 21-1 at FanDuel, though. Xander Schauffele is 22-1, while Cameron Young is next at 25-1.

Two big names who are available at FanDuel at 30-1 will stand out: Max Homa and Tony Finau. Homa won the Farmers Insurance Open and finished second to Rahm at the Genesis Invitational, while Finau finally broke through with back-to-back wins last summer.

Will Zalatoris and Sam Burns are 33-1, while Viktor Hovland is 35-1. Sungjae Im is 40-1.

Tiger & Phil: Reunited

Something feels right about Tiger and Phil being back at the Masters together.

There’s a big difference on the odds board between the two, though. At bet365, Woods is listed at 66-1, a number he won’t see outside of Augusta National.

Woods finished T45 at the Genesis Invitational, which is his only start of 2023. Woods hosts that tournament, although players who play well at Riviera Country Club tend to play well at Augusta.

Mickelson, meanwhile, has been struggling in LIV Golf since it’s incarnation. This year, he has T27 (out of 48 players) and T30 finishes, and he was in the 40s heading into the final round Sunday.

As such, Mickelson is toward the bottom of bet365's odds board at 200-1. That’s higher than LIV players Kevin Na and Harold Varner III, but “Lefty” is nearing Bernhard Langer territory.
