On Wednesday, we head to LoanDepot Park to find value in a NRFI between two National League teams.
The Reds will send out veteran Mike Minor, who is 9-1 to the NRFI with a 3-0 road record. When facing hitters the first time, he’s holding them under .200 average. Specifically in the first inning, Minor has faced 39 batters, allowing seven hits and three walks.
Despite the fact the 34-year-old pitcher hasn't faced a majority of these Florida hitters, his best matchup toay will be against Joey Wendle, who is 0 for 2 against him.
And coming out of the All-Star break, some Florida hitters are in the midst of severe slumps:
- Joey Wendle: 3 for 30
- Jesus Aguilar: 4 for 34
- JJ Bleday: 4 for 25
The Marlins are famous for their NRFIs and rightfully so. They're on an 8-2 run, making them overall 86-18 to the NRFI that's good for an 83% rate.
The Marlins will counter with their ace in Sandy Alcantara. Entering this game, Alcântara is 17-4 with a respectable 8-3 home NRFI split. Facing hitters the first time through the order, Alcântara has held them in check by allowing .163 average.
In the first inning, Alcantara faced 81 batters He has only allowed 11 hits and eight walks, holding them to a .157 opening-frame average.
This is how Alcantara has done against some of these hitters in the past:
- Kyle Farmer: 0 for 6
- Jonathan India: 1 for 4
- Joey Votto: 2 for 6
It should be noted Kyle Farmer is also just 3 for 21 in his last seven days, which is good for a subpar .143 average.
The Reds have achieved the NRFI bet on the road this year at 79% of the time. This was before they traded Brandon Dury and Tommy Pham. Losing these key hitters means we should see a slight increase in this number.
That said, bank on these excellent NRFI pitchers to handle these weak first-inning offenses. Take the NRFI between the Reds and the Marlins.
