Rays vs Dodgers MLB Betting Preview

Tampa Bay Rays Betting Preview

It's been a rough past month for Rays starter Shane McClanahan. No shame in that, since he's missed the past two years with injury, but he gave up four runs in three of his last five starts and failed to record more than 16 outs in any of them.

Still, the former All-Star boasts a 3.23 ERA with a strong 3.71 xERA and 2.77 FIP. The elite FIP stems from McClanahan's 0.42 HR/9, a wholly unsustainable number for a pitcher that ranks in the 35th percentile in barrel rate and 32nd in hard-hit rate.

He leads the league with a 4.5 HR/FB rate, down from 13% in 2023. He was tied with White Sox starter Davis Martin, but the Yankees tagged him for three homers yesterday.

The Rays' offense is annoying to face, but I mean that in the most complimentary way possible. They bunt runners over, steal bases, and come up with enough timely hits to win games.

However, the big hits haven't come of late, as Tampa Bay ranks 24th in MLB with a 95 wRC+ this month. Its average sank to .245 in June, while it has a league-worst 10 home runs.

My concerns with this lineup center around the lack of big boppers. The trio of Jonathan Aranda, Junior Caminero and Yandy Diaz combine for 38 of the team’s 58 homers. This month, Diaz has an ISO below .100, and Aranda has a 66 wRC with a .022 ISO.

Cedric Mullins has picked up some of the slack, leading the team with a 160 wRC+ and three long balls in his last 13 games. But It’s not enough to make up for Diaz and Aranda having a tough time in the box.

What can I say about the legendary Shohei Ohtani that hasn’t already been said? This is the best season that Ohtani has enjoyed on the mound, posting a 1.06 ERA with a 2.63 xERA and 2.67 FIP.

Now, can you expect Ohtani to keep his ERA in the low 1.00 range? Of course not. His underlying figures would tell you that, and the rarity of those numbers tells you that.

He also has a 9.71 K/9, down from 11.82 last year, but his BB/9 jumped to 2.79 from 1.72. Plus, he's holding teams to a .195 xBA and limiting teams to a 3.7% barrel rate.

I talked about McClanahan's HR/9 feeling unsustainable, so I have to talk about why I believe in Ohtani’s ability to maintain a HR/9 in the 0.50 range — over 78% of his outs come via the strikeout or groundout. That, paired with his elite barrel rate, limits his chances of imploding.

The Dodgers lineup leads MLB with a 120 wRC+ for the year — seven points higher than the Yankees in second place.

In June, that 120 dipped to 117, which is eighth in that span. That speaks to the consistency of the most talented lineup in the league — even their low points are higher than most teams' highs.

In those two weeks, Ohtani is running a 240 wRC+, while Max Muncy and Freddie Freeman are above 140. Plus, Kyle Tucker has a .798 OPS over his past seven games — not exactly worth his 50+ million a year, but improvement from his early-season woes.

Rays vs Dodgers Pick, Betting Analysis

Give me the Dodgers run line here. The pure power of this talented lineup could make McClanahan’s home run regression come to reality. I also just don’t see the Rays doing much damage to Ohtani.

They need the BABIP luck on their side — and he’s done well to limit teams in all aspects this year.

Pick: Dodgers -1.5 (play to -105)
