Colorado State vs Virginia Tech College Basketball Betting Preview
Colorado State Basketball
Colorado State lost a brutal game to KenPom's No. 304 team Denver in Fort Collins before heading to the Bahamas.
In that loss, the glaring hole in the Rams' attack came to haunt them — they can't defend. Denver scored 83 points, shot over 50% from the field and scored 1.38 PPP. The warning signs of defensive issues had shown all along, as the Rams allowed three of their first four opponents to score 1.08 or more PPP.
Why didn't it haunt them before? An elite offense can mask defense issues when the shots are falling.
It's fitting for a team coached by Ali Farokhmanesh (who loved shooting 3s during his playing days at Northern Iowa) to be an elite shooting outfit. The Rams have five shooters in the starting lineup, as both bigs — Kyle Jorgensen and Carey Booth — can drill from deep.
Jorgensen has morphed into a superstar. The sophomore big man leads the Rams with 17.6 points per game and is shooting 50% from 3. Booth is a monster athlete who plays the "center" spot since he can rebound better than Jorgensen.
Neither player is flawless, though. Jorgensen is a bit slower and can get exposed on defense. Booth is a wiry 6-foot-10, 215 pounds, and beefier bigs can toss him around.
That's part of why the Rams are so much better on the offensive end of the floor.
Colorado State sits 19th in KenPom's offensive efficiency. And a word to its opponents, don't trail late against the Rams. They shoot a country-leading 85% from the foul line. That'll put a game to bed in a hurry.
The Rams are as live-or-die by the 3 as it gets, though. Over 52% of Colorado State's field goal attempts come from deep, and 44.9% of them connect. That'll lead to a lot of wins.
We'll see how playing a tougher, more physical opponent affects the Rams, though.
I'm buying stock in Colorado State long-term. The offense is elite, and that'll destroy opposing teams in the Mountain West.
But I have no trust in this defense turning things around. The guards are small and the bigs aren't good defenders. The Rams are just not built to defend at a high level.
Virginia Tech Basketball
Virginia Tech has its eyes on snapping a three-year run without making the Big Dance.
The Greek sensation, Neoklis Avdalas, is looking to help snap the skid. Avdalas, a 6-foot-8 point guard, garnered national pub after scoring 33 points in a win over Providence. For the year, Avdalas averages 15.4 points with 5.2 assists per game.
He'll be a total nightmare for the smaller Rams' backcourt to contain.
I'm expecting a dominant game from the Hokies' leading scorer, Amani Hansberry. At 6-foot-8, 240 pounds, Hansberry could use his size to dominate the skinny Booth inside. He's also comfortable defending on the perimeter, so he can impact the game for Virginia Tech in multiple ways.
Virginia Tech is more balanced than the Rams. The Hokies also don't have the same explosiveness to drop 90+ like it's nothing.
The Hokies sit 51st in offensive efficiency and a troubling 88th in defensive efficiency. Colorado State is a worse defensive team, but that's not saying much. Virginia Tech also has work to do on that end.
For what it's worth, Virginia Tech held three of four opponents to fewer than 0.90 PPP, only allowing more to Providence and Saint Joe's.
Colorado State vs. Virginia Tech Betting Analysis
For Virginia Tech, I view this game similarly to the affair against Providence. The Rams want to score a bunch, but the Hokies can also score at a high level.
In this matchup, the individual advantages on the Hokies' side are the difference-maker.
I'm not sure who on the Rams' roster can contain Avdalas from using his size to score and dissect the defense with his passing.
I'm going with the favorites to score all over Colorado State.
My Pick: Virginia Tech -3.5 (Play to -5)
