Towson vs Rhode Island College Basketball Betting Preview
Towson Basketball
Towson had a really nice showing earlier in the season, having only lost to Houston by 17.
This team leans in on its defense to keep it in games. We've seen excellent on-ball defense, and the Tigers do a great job of contesting everything while minimizing second-chance opportunities.
Towson is 56th nationally in offensive rebound percentage allowed and 43rd in effective field goal percentage, per KenPom’s rankings. This team gets its opponent deep into the shot clock frequently.
This game against Rhode Island will be a major indicator of how this group can play on the fly, and I'll be interested to see if the Tigers can limit transition opportunities for the Rams.
Towson is going to play at a grinding, slow pace, as it's extremely methodical on the offensive end of the floor. Not only that, but the Tigers haven't played a game above 65 possessions. They're also not a strong shooting team.
Towson is led by Tyler Tejada and Dylan Williamson, who average 30 points per game combined between the two of them. We should see the offense flow through these two.
Jack Doumbia Jr. does a decent job down low on the block and can collect offensive rebounds and accumulate second-chance opportunities, something Rhode Island gives up.
Rhode Island Basketball
Rhode Island comes into this one as winners of three straight games, and the success has been fueled by its defense.
The Rams have really ratcheted up the intensity early in the season. They do an excellent job of providing on-ball pressure and turning over the opposition, where they rank eighth nationally in defensive turnover rate.
Rhode Island is going to extend pressure and constantly annoy its opponents far beyond the 3-point line. However, while the opportunistic defense has feasted in the early going, it could leave the Rams exposed against a Towson group that doesn't turn the ball over.
The Rams' offense has benefitted from excellent shooting early on and is led by guards Jonah Hinton and Tyler Cochran, who are both averaging 15 points per game.
The Rams want to get out and run, specifically after the defense forces turnovers, and Rhode Island is very efficient in transition. This team wants to attack at the rim and has feasted on the offensive glass so far this season.
We should see this offense tested by Towson more than what we've seen so far from Rhode Island’s early-season opponents.
Towson vs. Rhode Island Betting Analysis
This is going to be such a fun battle on a neutral court, with a little bit of a pace war. I like the under, which we can currently get at 139.5 at the time of writing.
Towson is going to grind you down on both ends of the floor. Its offense rarely seeks to push the ball and it works the shot clock down routinely.
The Tigers aren't a strong shooting team and will likely struggle to consistently find high-percentage shots against Rhode Island's defense.
Towson is a poor 3-point shooting team and it struggles more than most at getting to the free-throw line.
On the other side, this Towson defense is top-100 nationally in effective field goal percentage, free-throw rate and limiting second-chance points.
Rhode Island is going to attempt to run a little bit, but I don’t think it'll be able to against Towson. The Rams have shot the ball pretty well this season, but this is going to be far and away the best defense Rhode Island will have seen to date.
This should be a slow-burning grinder, and I like that we get this one early in the morning at a neutral site. This will be a fun game, but I expect fewer than 65 possessions. With the way both defenses challenge and contest shots, the shooters might find it tough to put the ball in the hole.
My Pick: Under 139.5
