Rutgers vs Tennessee College Basketball Betting Preview

Rutgers Basketball

A 4-1 record for Rutgers can be taken with a grain of salt, as its non-conference schedule hasn't been good. Also, the Scarlet Knights are coming off an ugly, 13-point loss to Central Connecticut State as 15.5-point favorites.

One of their main concerns for the Scarlet Knights is their lack of efficiency shooting the ball. They rank 261st in the nation in 2-point field goals, which is trouble when you’re going against the team that ranks in the top 20 in the nation in that area and is holding opponents under 42% from the field.

Even though Tennessee doesn't play super fast, Rutgers will also have difficulty keeping pace with the Vols. The Scarlet Knights are one of the slowest teams in the nation, and they’ll be matched up against a team that ranks near the top of the country in average possession length.

This is pretty much a new roster for Rutgers, making it inexperienced and lacking proven talent. Only four players return from last season's squad.

They also did little to address their interior issues, which means they'll likely continue to struggle to protect the rim and finish consistently in the paint. Those are both major issues when facing a very good Tennessee team.

The Volunteers come into this game with their own roster turnover, but they've gelled nicely through their non-conference schedule so far.

The Vols are the top offensive rebounding team in the nation and they’re third in adjusted defensive efficiency.

They may have lost a lot of production from last season, but Rick Barnes has done a really good job at reloading.

Along with versatile transfers, Rick Barnes was able to add Nate Ament — a 6-foot-10, 207-pound freshman — to beef up their paint game.

Rutgers vs. Tennessee Betting Analysis

Feast Week is finally here, and it’s one of the greatest weeks of the calendar year. It’s also one of those tricky situations, because teams will be playing back-to-back days for the first time this season and will also be playing through some early start times.

So, I’m most likely never going to be too keen to lay this many points. And as we alluded, is Tennessee focused on Rutgers? I think the Vols might be looking ahead to their Tuesday game against a top-five team in Houston.

We'll solely rely on Rutgers to keep the scoring pace, but with Tennessee looking ahead, I think this is a really good spot to back the underdog. It’s currently at 14.5, and I don’t expect much movement either way. Regardless, I wouldn’t bet it at anything less than +13.

My Pick: Rutgers +14.5 (Bet to +13)
