With just a handful of games remaining, the Toronto Blue Jays are in crunch time as they cling to a wild-card spot in the American League. However, trying to play spoiler will be the New York Yankees, who have been eliminated from playoff contention after a disappointing season.
One man looking to end the year on a high note will be Yankees' ace Gerrit Cole. He will be making his final start of the season tonight, and it could cement his AL Cy Young candidacy.
Opposing Cole for Toronto will be starter Jose Berrios, who's had a resurgent season and become a trustworthy option in the middle of the Jays rotation. Although, is he a fade candidate tonight?
Let's take a close look to find out.
We've talked to no end about the struggles this Yankees lineup has had this season. The Yanks come into this matchup with the second-lowest team batting average in the majors and still rank in the bottom third of baseball in wOBA and wRC+.
However, they have seen the ball well from Jose Berrios. The current Yankees' lineup has accumulated 158 at-bats against him, and they hold a collective batting average of .272 and have an xSLG of .470.
While they have struck out quite a bit against Berrios, their past success against him, combined with Berrios' impending regression, should point to the Yankees getting the bats going early tonight.
The Blue Jays have struggled at the plate of late, and that is not what you want to hear, given the circumstances.
However, the facts are that the Jays have hit just .203 over the last two weeks and rank 26th in wRC+ over that same span.
This scuffling lineup will have to deal with Gerrit Cole for the last time this season. Cole has been lights out this season, and he comes in with a 2.75 ERA and a microscopic WHIP of 1.02.
While Cole has dominated nearly every lineup in front of him, he has especially held the Jays quiet. Toronto's collective batting average against Cole is just .227, and they have a 29.3% whiff rate.
Yes, Cole is due for some regression, but the Jays are not in a position to provide it tonight.
Yankees vs. Blue Jays
Betting Pick & Prediction
The Jays are in danger of scuffling in the final week as their bats have run cold. Plus, tonight, they are unlikely to pick up, and their pitching may not carry the load either.
I alluded to fading Jose Berrios, and the best way to do that in this matchup is with his strikeout prop line. Berrios' total is set at 6.5, and that has proven to be too high for him.
Over his last 63 starts, he has gone under this total in 69.8% of them. That gives us implied odds of -231 that he will go under again tonight.
We have significant line value on the under, and our Action Labs projections like this under as well. They have Berrios slated for 5.9 strikeouts tonight.
