DraftKings and Jake Paul's new betting app are among several to alert Massachusetts regulators of their interest in the newly legal state.

As of Friday Aug. 26, the Massachusetts Gaming Commission received notice of intent forms from six online sportsbooks already operating in other states: DraftKings, PointsBet, WynnBet, BallyBet, SI Sportsbook and PlayUp.

Also on the list: Jake Paul's recently announced micro-betting venture, Betr, and sports retail giant Fanatics, which has tapped former FanDuel CEO Matt King to put together a gaming business.

More Expected to Apply

FanDuel, Caesars, BetMGM and Barstool are expected to apply for sports betting licenses, though they have not yet notified the commission of their interest.

The notice of intent deadline is Aug. 31 — though failure to meet it would not prohibit a company from applying for a license. It's mostly a heads up on who's interested, while the regulatory process that proceeds a launch moves through its first phase.

At their first meeting since Gov. Charlie Baker signed Massachusetts sports betting into law, earlier this month, the commission indicated a late 2022 or early 2023 launch is likely.

A Dozen Spots Left

Under the authorizing bill, Massachusetts can have up to 15 online sportsbooks.

The state's three casinos are each allowed two online partners each. WynnBet, BetMGM and Barstool have already struck such partnerships, meaning there's three casino-tethered spots still up for grabs.

Massachusetts' two racetracks will each be allowed one online partner. The remaining seven spots will not require a partnership with a retail venue.

Add those all together and there are a dozen online licenses left.
