It's no surprise when the defending national champs start off a season looking strong. Of course, they just lifted the trophy for being the best team in the country.
But when you absolutely bully a top-15 opponent on a neutral field by 46 points, then it's a different story.
That's exactly what Stetson Bennett and the Georgia Bulldogs did last week to Oregon.
This week, they face a much inferior opponent in the Samford Bulldogs, but the challenge to cover may have gotten significantly more difficult.
A line that reads 52 points is not only eye-popping, but borderline unbelievable for a Week 2 ball game, regardless of the opponent. Let's see just where to toss your money on the line this weekend.
Samford Bulldogs
The Samford Bulldogs are coming off of a Thursday night Week 1 victory over Kennesaw State, meaning they will have an extra two days to rest and prepare for Georgia.
Will it matter in the grand scheme of things? Probably not.
However, it will come into play regarding how well Samford will be able to slow down a Georgia offense that looked like it had reached an extra gear against Oregon.
The Samford offense really did not have a bad day, despite putting just 24 points on the board in its opener. Following two three-and-outs to begin the day, Samford did not punt for the remainder of the game.
Quarterback Michael Hiers had a pretty solid outing, throwing for four touchdowns. However, the issues that prevented the Bulldogs from putting more points on the board included a lack of big plays and committing costly turnovers.
Typically when a smaller school like Samford is set to shock the world of degenerates who have skin in its game with a large line like this, explosive plays are needed.
On the offensive side of the ball, Samford allowed seven pressures and had its quarterback hit five times. Against Georgia, I expect both of those numbers to be in the double figures.
Left tackle Austin Guyse was a target for Kennesaw State all evening, and I expect Georgia to have its way with him, as well.
In the running game, Samford ball carriers forced just four missed tackles. If you were unable to make plays in space against Kennesaw State, just imagine how swarming a defense like Georgia's will be.
It's going to be a long afternoon for the Samford offense. Samford will be lucky to get the opportunity to kick a pair of field goals Saturday afternoon.
Georgia Bulldogs
It was Bennett and the offense that stole the show early against Oregon in Week 1, but the defense holding an Oregon offense to just three points is where I was most impressed.
There was a lot of talk regarding the departures to the NFL that Georgia was going to have to overcome in 2022, and it didn't take long to see it was going to be just fine.
Mykel Williams, Nolan Smith and Jalen Carter dominated in Week 1, combing for eight pressures and three hits on the quarterback. That's not to mention Bo Nix is not an easy quarterback to contain — constant pressure kept him scrambling essentially all evening long.
As a result, Nix completed just 56.8% of his passes and sat at a mere 4.7 yards per attempt rate.
The complimentary football Georgia brings to the table between its pass rush and secondary is superb and likely unmatched from anyone else in the country.
The Oregon wide out with the longest target of depth sat at 16.0. There simply is not enough time for receivers to get downfield and allow a play to develop before the pass rush comes swarming in. Yet, when offenses go the quick route, Georgia does not miss tackles — only seven in the opener.
Georgia showed in its opener against Oregon that when the game gets out of hand, the pace slows dramatically. The Dawgs ran just 62 offensive plays in their opener compared to 68 from Oregon.
The pace will slow down against Samford — especially when UGA is up 40 points late in the ball game — to minimize the risk of unnecessary injuries.
