Yankees vs. Orioles Odds, Predictions, Pick: Bet the Bronx Bombers to Pile On In First 5 Innings (Friday, May 14)

Despite getting blown out in yesterday’s contest, the Yankees managed to win their road series over the Rays at the Trop. Meanwhile, the Orioles got swept in a two-game interleague series against the Mets, which isn’t a good look.
This game will represent the eighth time the Yankees and Orioles have played this season, and the Yanks currently lead the season series, 4-3.
I'm looking for the Yankees to build on that season series lead in this road opener today.
Yankees Seem Unfazed by COVID-19 Issues
The COVID-19 issues facing the Yankees are concerning, and Gleyber Torres is still out, but the team doesn’t seem fazed. The Yankees are 7-3 in their last 10 games and have won four of their last five.
Giancarlo Stanton has been the engine of the Yankees' recent surge. He’s been otherworldly in the past few weeks, as he’s slashing .393/.456/.672 with four home runs and 10 RBIs over his last 15 games. The Yankees are also 10-5 in those performances.
The rest of the Yankees roster continues to do its part, as well. Aaron Judge ranks near the top of the leaderboards in exit velocity, Aroldis Chapman and the rest of the bullpen have been unhittable, and the pitching rotation has improved mightily since the season started.
That includes today’s starter.
Starting pitcher: Corey Kluber (RHP)
Kluber hasn’t been pitching like a two-time Cy Young award winner this season.
However, he hasn’t been bad either. Plus, Kluber is coming off three high-quality starts. Over his past three games, Kluber’s thrown 20 1/3 total innings while allowing just three runs on 14 hits. Moreover, he’s struck out 21 batters and allowed just six walks, and the Yankees are 3-0 in those starts.
Kluber’s performance this season is going to become very important. For a Yankees team that is stacked with talent, the rotation outside of Gerrit Cole is average at best. If Kluber can pitch like the ace he was in Cleveland, it provides a big secondary arm in that rotation and makes the Yankees a very scary team.
The good news today is that Kluber has been great against the Orioles.
In eight career starts against Baltimore, Kluber sports a 4-1 record, a 2.73 ERA and a 1.04 WHIP. In his most recent outing against the O’s, on April 27, Kluber pitched 6 2/3 innings and allowed just one run in a winning effort.
Orioles Still Struggling Despite Exciting Lineup
As we expected, Baltimore is a poor baseball team. It now sits in last place in the AL East with a run differential of -20. It's also won just three of its last 10 games.
However, there are a lot of exciting players on the O’s this year.
John Means has emerged as a true ace. Cedric Mullins is hitting .308 and is third in MLB in hits. Trey Mancini, at 37 years old, has turned back the clock and is sixth in MLB in RBIs. Freddy Galvis has been slugging a bit as well, sporting an OPS+ of 131.
The bullpen has seen some success, too. The Baltimore relievers are 10th in FIP over the past seven days, while Adam Plutko and Paul Fry have thrown 34 2/3 combined relief innings with a combined ERA below two.
Outside of Means (and Matt Harvey at times), the starting pitching has been awful. Unfortunately for the Orioles, today’s starter doesn’t inspire much hope.
Starting Pitcher: Dean Kremer (RHP)
Kremer has now made six starts as part of the Orioles' rotation, and he continues to be one of the most hard-hit pitchers in baseball.
Among pitchers who have faced at least 50 batters this season, Kremer boasts the third-highest average exit velocity (93.4 mph) and the 19th-highest hard-hit percentage. That does not bode well for pitching against Stanton and Judge today.
It hasn’t boded well in the past, either. Kremer has started against the Yankees twice already, and he’s allowed nine runs and 15 hits while pitching just 7 1/3 total innings. The Orioles lost both of those games badly.
Kremer’s had an abysmal season so far, but his last two starts have been much better. Against Seattle and Boston, Kremer pitched 11 innings between the two starts and allowed just four runs in the process.
Yankees-Orioles Pick
I’m not going to get cute with this pick.
Kremer is a pitcher who allows really hard contact. The Yankees are one of the harder-hitting teams in the league with two of the hardest-hitting players on the planet.
Just like the previous two starts, I’m expecting the Yankees to tee off on Kremer.
Kluber hasn’t had a bad start against Baltimore since 2013 and just had an excellent start against the O's when he last faced them. I’m looking for him to build on his previous three outings and provide another quality start for the club.
