How to Place a Mobile Sports Bet in Colorado
It's easy to get started with sports betting in Colorado. Here's how:
Step 1: Choose a CO Sportsbook
Colorado has a few sportsbooks, and will eventually have more than a dozen, so you'll be able to shop for the best lines. But you have to start with one. Let's start with BetMGM! If you want signup steps with a video walkthrough on placing your first bet in Colorado, check out our write-up here.
Step 2: Sign Up & Deposit
Follow the prompts to set up your account with BetMGM. They may ask for your social security number or driver’s license to verify your identity and age. BetMGM will take you right to the deposit screen once you’ve put in your information. Select your payment method, then click deposit. The best method, in our opinion, is direct deposit via a bank account. You can use your login, and when you cash out, the money will go straight to your bank account (and not credited back to a card).
Step 3: Verify Your Location
If you're using a desktop computer, Colorado sportsbooks require you to download location-tracking software. The state uses GeoComply, which is an industry gold standard. If you're on your phone, just allow the app to track your location, and you won't need additional software.
Step 4: Place a Legal Bet in CO
BetMGM offers fair odds compared to its competitors in a lot of markets. Here's how to make a bet. Congrats! You’ve just placed your first legal sports bet online in Colorado!
- Go to the sport
- Click the line you want to bet
- Click bet slip (or navigate if you're on a computer)
- Enter your bet amount
- Submit
CO Sports Betting Regulations
CO gives sports bettors freedom to wager with relatively few restrictions, but there are some key regulations in place to be aware of.
Legal Sports Betting in Colorado
Sports fans can wager on a full range of bet types, including:
- Point Spreads. Spread betting is a bet on the margin of victory in a game, or the point "differential." (See: Our Guide to Point Spread Betting)
- Moneylines. Moneyline betting is when you pick the winner of the game or event, either one team or another. (More detail here: Moneylines)
- First Half & Second Half. Halves let a bettor treat the first half and the second half as separate matches. (Additional insights: Half Bets)
- Totals. A total, also known as an over/under, is a bet on the number of points both teams will combine to score in a game. (See: Understanding Totals in Sports Betting)
- Futures. Future bets are a bet on an event that will be decided in the future (e.g., end-of-season results). (More: Longer-term Betting: Futures)
- Player Props. A "prop" bet, short for a proposition, is a wager that is not directly tied to the final score or outcome. (See: Everything to Know About Prop Bets)
There are also no shortage of sports markets that bettors can take advantage of to make wagers, including:
- Football: NFL & CFL
- Basketball: NBA, WNBA, European/international baseball league
- Baseball: MLB
- Hockey: NHL, international hockey leagues
- Soccer: MLS, English Premier League, UEFA Champions League
- College sports: NCAA football and basketball, more NCAA sport types will come online
- Golf: PGA Tour, LPGA Tour, PGA Tour Champions, PGA European
- Auto Racing: IndyCar, NASCAR, Formula One
Additional market choices like boxing, tennis, rugby and more are also be offered at many of CO's sportsbooks.
What Can't I Bet On in CO?
CO sports bettors are prohibited from individual performance prop bets across all college sports. ❌
What does this mean? You cannot bet that #12 on the Buffaloes will score 20 points in a particular game. However, you can bet on if a particular CU player is favored to win the Naismith Trophy this season. So, there are no single-game player prop bets allowed to eliminate the possibility of gameplay conflicts of interest.
Where to Bet on Sports in CO
Online & Via Mobile Apps
For now, the most straightforward method to bet legally is online or via your mobile phone through one of the currently live sportsbooks: DraftKings, Caesars, BetMGM, FanDuel, SI Sportsbook, BetRivers, Fanatics Sportsbook, Betway and Betfred. You will need to be within state borders — the sportsbooks will verify your location before you can commit to any bets.
In-Person Betting at CO Casinos and Professional Sports Venues
Longer-term, Coloradans will have plenty of options from stadium sportsbooks to casinos in real life. The launch of these venues as sports betting destinations will be announced separately when they are ready to do so. Betfred Sportsbook at the Saratoga Casino and the SI Sportsbook at the Colorado Grande Casino have full sportsbook offerings open to the public already. For more information, we detail all existing, potential, and known in-progress physical betting destinations in the "Sportsbook Partnerships" section and within the "Locations" information at the end of the page.
Colorado Sports Betting Tips
Sports Betting for Beginners
If you’re new to sports betting in Colorado, you likely have questions: How much should you be betting? Where should you be betting on the Nuggets win totals? How do you find the best odds for a Broncos game? Every sport and bet type comes with different nuances.
Our betting education hub can help you make savvier decisions come game time.
Sports Betting Glossary
Sports betting comes with its own language and terminology — favorites and underdogs, spreads and money lines, over/under and props, juice, and vig, and so much more. It can all be a bit overwhelming and intimidating for newer betting enthusiasts, so be sure to consult our sports betting glossary for detailed definitions of all the main terms.
Don't worry: the online sportsbooks we recommend will also help define these terms within their product to make everything easier for you to understand, too.
Sports Betting Mistakes to Avoid
Whether you’re betting on the Rapids game totals or Rockies futures, sports betting isn't easy. It’s important to stay disciplined and not overextend yourself. There will always be ups and downs, but if you stay true to our betting mistakes to avoid, your sports betting experience will be a much more enjoyable one.
Colorado’s Department of Revenue, Gaming Division, offers tools to help bettors manage behavior responsibly as well.
How Colorado Sports Betting Compares: The Sports Betting Report Card
We took a look at Colorado's sports betting bill — mobile availability, sportsbook options, available markets and more. Here's how the state lines up vs. the rest of the U.S.
Colorado's sports betting market is something special for sports fans as well as experienced and novice bettors alike. Why? Colorado has the best — aka the least restrictive — sports betting bill of any newly legal state in the nation. Colorado's arrangement checks all the important boxes and is even better than well-known existing mature markets like in New Jersey (no betting on college teams from the state) or Nevada (in-person registration requirements).
It's easy for potential bettors to sign up online and there's a low barrier to entry, so plenty of sportsbooks are launching in Colorado. There are no overly restrictive constraints on bet types, like collegiate athletics.
With plenty of beloved pro teams and local activity to bet on, the state will be an attraction for bettors. Due to the ease of mobile betting, we wouldn't be surprised to have commuters travel over state borders to bet in Colorado with sports returning from their pandemic hiatuses.
Mobile Betting Options
You can bet on your phone, from anywhere in Colorado. That's as good as it gets in the U.S. right now.
Whether you’re in a trendy Denver sports bar or hiking in Rocky Mountain National Park, if you’ve got cell service, you’re set.
Deposit
Colorado got right what so many other states have gotten wrong — fully online registrations and deposits. That allows customers to sign up for a variety of sportsbooks with ease and allows players from out of state to drive across the border and place bets similar to New Jersey.
For those in need of a geographic refresher, that means: sports fans from Nebraska, Kansas, Oklahoma and New Mexico may visit Colorado on any given game day.
Colorado's casinos aren't concentrated in populous areas, either. So in-person registrations would have damaged market accessibility in a big way.
Fair Pricing
Colorado did everything it could to create an environment that would offer fair pricing.
Offerings
Colorado can't offer everything an offshore sportsbook can, but among legal states, there's no one better than Colorado. You can bet on e-sports, college teams in the state and so much more.
Colorado's low barrier to entry for sportsbooks will allow some great products to enter the market in the near future, too, like Circa and Westgate.
How do taxes work with sports betting winnings (or losses)?
Whether you play online on a mobile device or at a physical sportsbook in The Centennial State, all sports betting winnings (and other gambling, including fantasy football) above $600 a year are taxed and must be reported. That amount could come from one big bet or smaller bets that add up to $600. The other details:
Federal Taxes
The federal tax rate on gambling winnings is 10%, which is among the lowest in comparison to other states. Operators often withhold this for you when cashing out, and provide tax documentation. You are responsible for completing the IRS Form W2-G to report winnings. See the W2-G form and IRS details here.
State Taxes
The more detailed, specific-to-you part are state taxes, which are included in the chart below:
Tax Rate |
Income if Single or Married |
4.55% | All qualifying citizens are taxed the same regardless of their filing status or income. |
Deducting Losses
You can deduct sports betting losses, but only as an itemized deduction — foregoing the standard deduction that most people take. It may or may not be worth it to do so. Additionally, the losses you deduct can't be greater than the amount of gambling income you report.
Example: With $2,000 in winnings but $4,000 in losses, your deduction is limited to $2,000. You can’t write off the other $2,000 you lost.
Gambling losses claimed up to the number of winnings are classified as "other itemized deductions" on your Schedule A Form 1040 come tax time with the IRS.
We recommend bettors keep receipts and detailed records on betting activity — one of the reasons online sportsbooks are great. They're kept by default and easy to access.
Colorado Sports Betting Background and Legalization Timeline
In November 2019, Coloradans voted to legalize sports betting within The Centennial State.
The Colorado bill's unique feature was an environmental angle: Proposition DD coupled sports betting legalization with a 10% sports gambling tax to support the state’s water conservation initiatives. Despite state leadership and environmental advocates' confidence in the bill, it passed at a tighter margin than anticipated at 51.41% to 48.59%. Still, a win is a win for bettors in Colorado. Sportsbooks officially started accepting bets in Colorado on May 1, 2020, with DraftKings, FanDuel, BetMGM and BetRivers leading the way — although the much-anticipated launch happened without major sports or casinos open and no major sports live due to the pandemic.
Sports betting is also available at Colorado's physical casinos located west of Denver and Colorado Springs. In the meantime, the Division of Gaming licensing office has adapted processes to enable licensing services for prospective operators and vendors.
Below is a complete timeline of CO's legalization process.

That was Colorado football's crowning achievement, though the Buffs have 27 conference titles to their name.
Colorado played in the Big Eight nearly 50 years before being one of the founding members of the Big 12 Conference in 1996. The Buffaloes now play in the Pac-12 Conference, which they joined in 2011. Colorado sportsbook operators will pay a 10% tax that will be effectively invisible to the consumer. But your sports betting winnings are taxable. An operator will send you a W-2G form if you win more than $600 with that sportsbook. You can write off gambling losses as a tax deduction, but only if you also report money won as taxable income. You also need to itemize your deductions — you can’t claim any gambling losses with a standard deduction. The amount of gambling losses you can deduct can’t exceed the winnings you report as income. With $2,000 in winnings but $4,000 in losses, your deduction is limited to $2,000. You can’t write off the other $2,000 you lost.
