It seems like New Yorkers were ready for sports bettors.

GeoComply, the company that provides location services to sportsbooks, posted a cool visualization of its location checks in New York over the first 30 minutes of legal betting on Saturday morning. Bettors must verify their location with GeoComply before any wagers at sportsbooks are accepted.

The timeline shows mostly what you'd think — the densely populated areas had an insane volume of bets. New York City and Long Island in particular, plus gambling-heavy areas like Buffalo and Rochester.

Per GeoComply's Lindsay Slader, "volume from NYC’s 5 boroughs alone exceeded 8M – larger than any other standalone state total within the US."

The first 36 hours of #SportsBetting in New York was LEGENDARY. In total, NY saw over 17M checks for their first weekend.

All in all, GeoComply said it ran more than 17 million location checks over the weekend. It ran more than 5 million on Saturday, the most on a state launch day by more than 2x.

Here's how many location checks the other states did in their first days (albeit with fewer events in the sports calendar for some).

  1. New York, 5.8M
  2. Pennsylvania, 2.3M
  3. New Jersey, 2.1M
  4. Michigan, 1.6M
  5. Illinois, 1.1M
  6. Arizona, 1M

It's possible based on the volume of location checks that New York already beat the $3.7 million in tax revenue it generated from in-person sports betting over the last 2.5 years this weekend alone. In just two days.

Turns out people like to bet online.

New York's sports betting bill isn't perfect with a 51% tax rate for operators, but it won't have any downstream impact on bettors anytime soon.
