Logging into the FanDuel sportsbook app on a device running Apple's iOS 16 beta software results in a temporary account ban, according to multiple users.

The next major iPhone software update won't be available until the fall, though Apple has made a "beta" version available for users to try before then. The FanDuel app, however, doesn't yet recognize the new software and treats iPhones running it as illegally modified — or jailbroken — devices.

For Jordan Stapleton, a user in Tennessee, that resulted in a 48-hour ban.

Several other users took to Twitter, echoing similar experiences.

"Thank you for bringing this to our attention, we are going to look into this and the customers impacted can reach out to Customer Service to note the issue, so we can help them once the issue has been identified," Kevin Hennessy, Director of Publicity at FanDuel, said.

The issue seems to lie more with Apple's test software than FanDuel.

It's not uncommon for devices running beta iOS updates to run into problems, especially when it comes to apps that rely on verifying a user's location, such as rideshare, legal marijuana or delivery services.

Most apps won't be updated to run Apple's new software until it officially releases in September, which is likely why FanDuel doesn't recognize it.

FanDuel, like every other online sports betting app, uses geolocation trackers to make sure bets come from within the confines of a legal state. When devices run unknown software it can trigger safeguards — like temporary bans — to prevent any illegal betting.

Jasper Rogers, a user in New York, had the same experience when attempting to bet on on his updated iPhone, though FanDuel is the only company that banned him.

"DraftKings was also the same issue, but I was able to just log in with my iPad after and successfully place my bets," Rogers said. "BetMGM just froze when I logged in, so I'm assuming it’s just not working there yet."

Stapleton added that he was also unable to log into his DraftKings account, though that doesn't result in ban.

To make matters more complicated, users can't restore an iOS 16 device to the previous iOS 15 software without a factory reset, which risks losing all unbacked-up data.

Multiple customer service reps recommended using devices running the previous iOS software, but were unable to lift temporary bans.
