The Kansas City Chiefs have entered a multi-year agreement to make BetMGM an official sports betting sponsor.

The announcement came just a few hours before Kansas launches its online sports betting market to BetMGM and five other apps.

“With a rich history and a passionate fan base, the Kansas City Chiefs are an ideal partner,” said BetMGM Chief Revenue Officer Matt Prevost. “As we launch our sports betting platform in Kansas, we look forward to elevating the game day experience for Chiefs fans throughout the region.”

Under the partnership, the Chiefs will place BetMGM signage around Arrowhead Stadium and feature its branded betting content across their digital channels.

“As an industry leader in the space, we are excited to welcome BetMGM to Chiefs Kingdom. We have invested significant time and energy advocating for sports wagering legislation and today’s announcement is going to open the doors for our fans to add to their experience for the 2022 season and beyond,” Chiefs President Mark Donovan said in a press release.

Kansas will be BetMGM’s 24th mobile and retail betting market. Sports wagering is still illegal in Missouri, where the Chiefs play, however.

The Chiefs and BetMGM are hoping that changes soon — one way or another.

Missouri has taken up sports betting five years in a row and came awfully close to passing it in its recent legislative session. Lawmakers will return to Jefferson City in a few weeks for a special session called by Gov. Mike Parson, though it's not likely they debate sports betting.

The bulk of tax revenue Kansas collects from sports betting will be used to attract professional sports teams. Chiefs officials had hinted at a relocation to Kansas if Missouri doesn’t pay for a new stadium; however, they’ve downplayed the notion in recent months.

Kansas City has proudly hosted the Chiefs since the early 1960s. We look forward to working with the Chiefs, our state of Missouri partners, and local officials to ensure the Chiefs remain home in Kansas City and Missouri for generations to come. https://t.co/h9XBn7L0VC

Only about a 26-mile drive from Kansas City, Missouri to Kansas City, Kansas — for now Chiefs attendees will have to drive back-and-forth to place bets legally.

BetMGM has mobile sports betting access in Kansas through a partnership with the Kansas Crossing Casino. The Casino will feature a retail sportsbook from Caesars, though no information is available about when that will open.
