Online Craps Glossary
Depending on your location, you may find online craps options at legal casinos. It’s a fast-paced game with a lot of slang. Learning these words may help you to become a better craps player.
Important Craps Terms
Ace: Any dice that shows a 1
Aces: A proposition (prop) bet that the next roll will be two 1s (a pair of ones), also called Snake Eyes
Ace Deuce: A roll of a 1 and 2 for a total of three, prop bet
Action: Any wagers in play on the table
Advantage: The casino or house edge for any table bet
Against the Dice: A bet on the Don’t Pass and/or the Don’t Come lines that you’ll roll a 7 before your point number
Any Craps: A prop bet that the next roll will be a 2, 3, or 12 (pays 7 to 1)
Any Seven: A prop bet that the next roll will be a 7 (pays 4 to 1)
Back Line: Another phrase for the Don’t Pass line
Betting Right: Any wagers on the Pass or Come lines or betting with the shooter
Betting Wrong: Any wagers on the Don’t Pass or Don’t Come lines or betting against the shooter
Big 6: A bet that you’ll roll a 6 before rolling a 7 (pays even money)
Big 8: A bet that you’ll roll an 8 before rolling a 7 (pays even money)
Big Red: A prop bet for rolling a 7
Bones: A slang term for the dice
Boxcars: A pair of sixes for a total of 12 (this prop bet pays 30 to 1)
Box Numbers: Another phrase for Place Bet numbers 4, 5, 6, 8, 9, and 10
Buy Bet: A Place Bet on box numbers but with a 5% commission to the casino to get true odds (check the table for Buy Bet rules)
Center Bets: Any wagers in the middle of the table
Center Field: A wager on rolling a 9
Come Bet/Come Line: Like a Pass Line bet (win with a 7 or 11; lose with a 2, 3, or 12 – box number bets may move to that number)
Come Out Roll: The first roll of a new game to set your point number
Craps Numbers: The numbers 2, 3, and 12
Crap Out: A roll of 2, 3, or 12 on the come out roll
Don’t Come Bet: A bet against the shooter after the come out roll that a 7 gets rolled before the point number or a 2, 3, or 12
Don’t Pass Bet: A bet against the shooter that the come out roll will be a 2, 3, or 12
Double Odds: To double the value of your original Pass, Don’t Pass, Come, or Don’t Come bets
Down: To reduce, remove, or “take down” any of your wagers
Easy Way: A roll of 4, 6, 8, or 10 without any pairs
Edge: The advantage of the casino to win against the player’s bets (“house edge”)
Even Money: Any bet that pays 1:1 or equal to your original wager
Fever: A roll of five (“fever five”)
Field Bet: A one-roll prop bet that the next roll will be a 2, 3, 4, 9, 10, 11, or 12 (2 pays double; 12 pays triple; the rest pay even money.
Free Odds: Free odds bets get placed as extra Pass, Don’t Pass, Buy, or Lay bets (pays true odds)
Front Line: Another phrase for the Pass Line
Garden: Another term for the Field or Field bets
Hard Way: Any roll of the dice that ends as a pair (1-1, 2-2, 3-3, 4-4, 5-5, 6-6)
Hardway Bet: A one-roll prop bet on rolling pairs for a total of 4, 6, 8, or 10 (2-2 and 5-5 payout 7 to 1 while 3-3 and 4-4 payout 9 to 1)
High: A bet on or roll of 12 (boxcars)
Hi-Lo: A one-roll bet on a 2 or 12
Hi-Lo-Yo: A one-roll bet on a 2, 11, or 12
House Edge: The advantage of a casino over a player
Hop: A one-roll prop bet on any specific combination of dice
Horn Bet: A one-roll prop bet on 2, 3, 11, or 12 (depending on the casino, 1-2 and 5-6 may payout 15 to 1; 1-1 and 6-6 payout 30 to 1)
Horn High Bet: A one-roll bet on 2, 3, 11, and 12 with two units on 12 and one each on the other three numbers
Hot Dice: A phrase for rolling the dice for an extended period of time without sevening out (“hot table”)
Inside Bet/Numbers: A place wager on 5, 6, 8, and 9
Insurance: A betting strategy to protect your wager(s) – E.g., betting on a 7 while also rolling for your point number
Lay Bet: A bet on rolling a 7 before your making your point (pays true odds depending on the number you choose)
Lay Odds: The odds associated with betting against the shooter on 4, 5, 6, 8, 9, 10
Line Bet: Another phrase for Pass/Don’t Pass bets
Little Joe: Slang for rolling a hard way 4 (2-2)
Low: A one-roll prop bet on a 2 (1-1) – pays 30 to 1
Marker: A white marker puck placed on the point number (the marker shows as a black OFF puck on the come out roll)
Midnight: A slang term for a one-roll prop bet on 12 (6-6) – pays 30 to 1
Natural: A term for rolling a 7 or 11 on the come out roll
Nina: A slang term for rolling or betting on a 9
Odds Bet: The same as “Free Odds” – extra bet(s) after wagering on the Pass or Don’t Pass lines (Pass, Don’t Pass, Place, or Lay)
Off: The come out roll or whenever there are bets on the table not in play
On: A point is in play along with live bets on the table
Outside Numbers: Any wagers on 4, 5, 9, or 10
One Roll Bets: Any bet on the outcome of the next roll of the dice
Parlay: A betting strategy of using any winnings for your next roll
Pass Line Bet: The most common bet in the game – you’ll win with a 7 or 11 on the come out roll or with your point; lose with a 2, 3, or 12
Place Bet: A bet on rolling a 4, 5, 6, 8, 9, and/or 10 before a 7 (pays 9 to 5 for 4 and 10; 7 to 5 for 5 and 9; and 7 to 6 for 6 and 8)
Place Numbers: The numbers 4, 5, 6, 8, 9, and 10
Playing the Field: A bet on 2, 3, 4, 9, 10, 11, and 12
Point/Point Number: A roll of 4, 5, 6, 8, 9, or 10 becomes your point – roll your point number before rolling a 7
Press a Bet: Any wager that increases the size of your initial bet
Proposition Bets: Any hardway or one-roll bets on the table
Push: Any bet that results in a tie – a roll of 12 on the come out or betting the Don’t Come line and rolling 12 would also be a push
Right Bettor: A bet on the Pass Line or Come line (betting with the shooter)
Same Bet: To make the same wager(s) in succession – aka “Press a Bet”
Seven Out: Rolling a 7 before your point – lose Pass, Come, Place, Buy, or prop bets – you'd win Don’t Pass, Don’t Come, Don’t Place, Lay bets
Snake Eyes: A slang phrase for rolling a 2 (1-1)
Take the Odds: Another way of referring to Free Odds or Odds Bets – betting with the shooter
Take Down: Another way of referring to Down – removing your bets
Three-Way Craps: A one-roll prop bet on 2, 3, and 12
True Odds: The implied probability of winning any bet
With the Dice: A bet that you’ll roll your point number before a 7
Working Bet: Any bet in play on the table
World Bet: A betting strategy of placing equal wagers on 2, 3, 7, 11, and 12 (aka Whirl Bet)
Wrong Way Bettor: A bet against the shooter (Don’t Pass, Don’t Come, Don’t Place, Lay)
Yo: A bet on or roll of 11 (aka Yo-leven)
