Thursday’s trade with the Cleveland Indians that brought Francisco Lindor and Carlos Carrasco to the New York Mets didn’t make the Mets the favorite to win the World Series, but it did make them the top liability at many sportsbooks.

William Hill said Thursday that the trade, which shortened the team's odds to win it all from 16/1 to 12/1, resulted in action that caused the Mets to be their greatest liability.

“It’s not a huge liability," William Hill’s director of trading Nick Bogdanovich said. "But it’s the most we’ve got with many people not wanting to tie their money up for too long in these COVID-era futures.”

The Mets now make up 31% of all dollars wagered on the World Series Champion at William Hill. Two top liabilities for the book include a Mets fan who bet $5,000 on the Mets at 25/1 and another fan wagered $3,000 at the book’s opening odds of 35/1.

By comparison, the Yankees — who have shorter odds to win it all — only have 4% of the total money wagered on them.

The Mets have the fifth-lowest odds at the book behind the Dodgers (+400), Yankees (+550), Padres (+800) and Braves (+850).

At least two other sportsbooks, DraftKings and PointsBet, also list the Mets as their top liability.

At DraftKings, the Mets opened at 33/1 in October, moved down to 22/1 in November, 18/1 by late December, 14/1 yesterday and 12/1 today.

Johnny Avello, the director of the race and sports book for DraftKings said late Thursday he expected the Mets to drop to single digits with a good start.

The Mets have absorbed 25% of the total handle at DraftKings, followed by the Padres (23%) and the White Sox (21%).

PointsBet, which is in fewer states (5) and has its biggest market in New Jersey, now has its biggest liability in the New York teams — Mets first, then Yankees.

At BetMGM, the Mets are now the second-most bet on team, with 11% of bets, behind the reigning champion Dodgers (12%). They are, however, fifth in handle (7%) behind the Padres (20%), Dodgers (19 percent), Angels (14%) and Yankees (9%).
